1 Quasimodo:

2 Vowels: Strong vowels: a, e, o, í, ú Weak vowels: i, u
Getting the vowel sounds right in pronunciation is the first step to having an authentic accent. Spanish has STRONG and WEAK vowels: Strong vowels: a, e, o, í, ú Weak vowels: i, u Which type of vowel you have impacts how you pronounce a word.

3 Letter sounds: C HARD: “k” sound When followed by : a, o, u
Carro Coche cueva SOFT: “s” sound When followed by: e, i Cerrado Cita Cien

4 Letter sounds: G HARD: “guh” sound When followed by: a, o, u
Gato Gozo Guantes Guerra SHOFT: “h” sound When followed by: e, i Gemelo Gigante

5 NOTE When “g” is followed by “ue” or “ui” then the “u” is silent (just there to make the “g” hard). If the “u” needs to be pronounced it will have 2 dots over it like this: “Ü” (Example: Pingüino) Like in English, the letter “q” is always followed by “u” and this “u” is silent. Examples: Equipo Guía Guerra Querer

6 Práctica: Guapo: Hard “G” “u” NOT silent Cercano:
1st “C” soft, 2nd “C” hard Conmigo: Hard “C” Hard “g”

7 Syllables: A word in broken up into syllables
In Spanish, whenever possible a syllable will be made up of a consonant followed by a vowel. Examples: Baño  ba/ño Uva  u/va Banana  ba/na/na There can only be 1 strong vowel per syllable. Leer  le/er Toalla  to/a/lla Geografía  Ge/o/gra/fí/a If a strong and a weak vowel are next to each other they combine into the same syllable. Quedarse  que/dar/se Historia  hi/sto/ria Syllables:

8 Syllables: Consonants
Typically syllables don’t end with a consonant (though there are exceptions to this – like when the word ends with a consonant) Basic rule for figuring out if 2 consonants should work together or if they should be split up between syllables is to see if those consonants could start a word off together. If they could then they will likely stick together in the syllable as well. Examples: Llamarse: lla/mar/se Allí: a/llí

9 Práctica: Son las tres elegante guapo excelentemente geografía archivo
certificado contestar fácil feliz historia

10 Tarea: Finish breaking up the practice words into syllables
Vocab quiz tomorrow: Los lugares + las preposiciones
