1 Electron Temperature Analysis in AUG using X-Ray PHA, comparison with ECE
Arthur Weller, Thanks to Laura Barrera Orte, Rainer Fischer AUG Program Meeting, 26 Sept 2011 ● Example: first observation of W-L lines in tok. ● PHA line of sight equivalent with Single Bragg spectrometer LOS ( A-port of sector 1) ● SDD detector at R = m, z = m

2 Forward Modelling of X-Ray Distributions - to extrapolate line integrated measurements to central values - ● input: AUG profiles from integrated data analysis (IDA) ● simple model for X-ray continuum rad. ( P ~ ne2∙exp(E/kTe) ) ● profile correction factors from slope of central and central LOS integrated continuum spectra (for each time points)

3 Comparison of Te0 from PHA and ECE (IDA) - Te from fitting slope of continuum spectrum -
W lines lin. ~ e(E)∙exp(E/kTe) ● X-ray spectra dominated by tungsten M-line radiation (W38+ … W49+) ● particular case (ECRH + ICRH) shows good agreement between ECE and SX Te-values … Te,ECE(0), IDA Te,PHA(0), corr. Te,PHA, Line int. log.

4 Comparison of Te0 from PHA and ECE (IDA) - suprathermal tail in low density ECRH plasma -
Te,PHA, Line int. Te,PHA(0), corr. Te,ECE(0), IDA ECE temperature agrees better with SX-PHA tail temperature ! unreliable

5 Comparison of Te0 from PHA and ECE (IDA) - suprathermal tail in low density phase of ECRH plasma -
Te,PHA(0), corr. Te,ECE(0), IDA Te,PHA, Line int. ECE temperature agrees better with SX-PHA tail temperature !

6 Comparison of Te0 from PHA and ECE (IDA) - NBI high density standard H-mode -
● fitted values robust against choice of energy interval for fits ● PHA yields significant higher Te compared with ECE & Thomsen !?

7 Comparison of Te0 from PHA and ECE (IDA) - 31 shots (596 data) out of 2011 with calib. ECE and IDA -
● PHA Line of sight measurement converted to central Te (correction factor from model using fitted ECE profiles (IDA)) ● central ECE Te values from extrapolation of ECE data by IDA-Fits ● Preliminary Conclusion: - at low density, ECE temperature correspond to suprathermal tail - scatter of data not fully understood - cross-calibration ECE-PHA difficult
