Providing Access to Vice Presidential Digital Photographs
Anna Yallouris, U.S. National Archives and Records Administration ABSTRACT The Presidential Materials Division at NARA holds the vice presidential records of Richard Cheney. The management, use, and access of Cheney materials is executed through NARA’s content management system for born-digital records, the Executive Office of the President (EOP) Instance of the Electronic Records Archive (ERA). METHODOLOGY CONCLUSION NARA has developed a system for born digital records to meet basic access requirements for vice presidential records. However, challenges remain, as archivists are often required to review and describe large volumes of records which makes it difficult to meet researcher expectations. EOP/ERA Review Notification Description Finding Aid NARA Catalog Access PRA/FOIA SEARCH 660,000 images 400th Anniversary of the Founding of Jamestown images: 547 total; 506 responsive 60 days 30 day extension BACKGROUND Providing access to vice presidential records is a unique process governed by the Presidential Records Act (PRA) and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that requires archivists to perform item-level review of records and apply exemptions and restrictions as applicable. Additionally, photographs require item-level description entries.
