1.3 Review Questions Draw a diagram that shows how water collects underground. What is the difference between a spring and a well? A spring is a place where surface of land meets water table, so water flows out. A well is a hole drilled into a saturated zone. What causes water to rise out of the ground in hot springs and geysers? Heat underground creates pressure which forces hot water upwards.

1.3 Review Questions Is a T-shirt permeable or impermeable? How about a raincoat? Explain why. A T-shirt is permeable because there is space in the cloth that water can pass through. A raincoat is impermeable because its material doesn’t have any spaces. Would you expect to find a spring on the very top of a hill? Why or why not? No because springs are at the level with a water table and a water table is not likely to be as high as the top of a hill. Illustrate how aquifers store water and how people bring the water to the surface. (Illustration on page 29 – How to make a well)
