What is it?

Types of Satire Horatian Satire: Pokes fun at human foibles with a witty even indulgent tone ~light-hearted Juvenalian Satire: Denounces, sometimes with invective, human vice and error in dignified and solemn tones ~serious Parody: Imitates and ridicules an author or a work.

Elements of Satire Irony: Conveying a reality different from and usually opposite to appearance or expectation. 2 types - Verbal Irony: through words Irony of Situation: through events Hyperbole: Deliberate exaggeration to achieve an effect; overstatement. Litotes: A form of understatement that involves making an affirmative point by denying its opposite. Wit: Clever expression. Can be characterized by a mocking or paradoxical quality evoking laughter through apt phrasing.

Elements of Satire Caricature: An exaggeration or other distortion of an individual’s prominent features or characteristics to the point of making that individual appear ridiculous. Usually graphic but can be literary. Sarcasm: Intentional derision. Obvious, verbal irony. Stating the opposite of what is meant in order to heighten the insult. Ridicule: Intended to belittle a person or idea and around contemptuous laughter. Goal is to condemn or criticize by making the thing, idea, or person seem laughable and ridiculous. Invective: Abuses, denounces, or attacks. Heavy use of negative emotive language.

Elements of Satire Reversal: to present the opposite of the normal order. This can focus on the order of events. Burlesque: ridiculous exaggeration achieved through a variety of ways. STYLE is the essential quality in burlesque. A style primarily dignified may be used for nonsensical manners.

Fallacies and Satire Fallacies are also often used purposefully by satirists to point out inconsistencies with society.
