Operation Barbarossa June 22, 1941
Germans were 500 miles into Russia and Russia used the scorched earth policy
September 8th Leningrad (St. Petersburg) was surrounded and starved out killing 1million of its 2.5 million civilians
October 2nd led by Dec. USSR General Zhukov counterattacked and help from a harsh winter, fuel froze and the Germans had to retreat but Hitler had them dig in for the winter killing ½ million German soldiers
