A. German troops trapped the Allied forces on (Dunkirk) the French coast and England sent 850 ships from May 26 –June 4 and took out 338,000 soldiers B. June 10th Mussolini (Italy) joined the Axis Powers and attacked from the south- June 14th Paris fell to the Nazis 9/16/2018

III. Hitler invades the USSR
Operation Barbarossa June 22, 1941 Germans were 500 miles into Russia and Russia used the scorched earth policy September 8th Leningrad (St. Petersburg) was surrounded and starved out killing 1million of its 2.5 million civilians October 2nd led by Dec. USSR General Zhukov counterattacked and help from a harsh winter, fuel froze and the Germans had to retreat but Hitler had them dig in for the winter killing ½ million German soldiers 9/16/2018

USA Aids its Allies Neutrality Act illegal to sell arms or lend money to nations at war Lend-Lease Act lend or lease arms and other supplies to any country that could be vital to the U.S. Atlantic Charter- Roosevelt and Churchill upheld free trade among nations and the right of people to choose their own gov. D. September 4th a German U-boat fired on a U.S. destroyer and Roosevelt ordered commanders to shoot U-boats on sight- undeclared naval war 9/16/2018
