4 The average acceptance rate of DP students into university/college is 24% higher than the average acceptance rate of the total population. The acceptance rate of IB students into Ivy League institutions (Princeton, Yale, Brown, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania) is between 3% and 13% higher compared to the total population acceptance rate. Based on student responses to a 2011 survey conducted by the IB, IB students are admitted to colleges and universities at rates higher than the general acceptance rates for the schools. On average, IB students’ acceptance rate is 22% higher than that of the total population for the school. Even at highly selective Ivy League Universities, IB students are admitted at rates 3-13% higher than the total population. 11 DP prepares students for college success
“IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB programme correlates well with success at Harvard. We are pleased to see the credential of the IB Diploma Programme on the transcript.” Marlyn McGrath Lewis, Assistant Dean of Admissions, Harvard University, USA “The IB is a first-rate programme, one we are familiar with, and it prepares students well for a university like ours.” Fred Hargadon, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Princeton University Colleges and universities recognize the effort students put into their studies in the Diploma Programme, preparing them well for success in college.

12 Colleges recognize the value of an DP education
“We know the quality of IB courses, and we think the IB curriculum is terrific.” Christoph Guttentag, Director of Admissions, Duke University “The rigour of IB Diploma requirements meets our recommendation for the strongest high school preparation possible. ... In sum, the IB diploma candidate who has met the challenge successfully receives strong consideration from the William & Mary admission committee.” Allison Jesse, former Associate Dean of Admissions, College of William and Mary Colleges and universities appreciate the quality of an IB education.

13 Colleges seek DP students
“We're looking for students who are engagers—students who are maximizing opportunities in the classroom, maximizing opportunities outside of the classroom. What's very unique about IB is that through its curriculum it allows students to be able to satisfy the requirements of the types of students that we're looking for.” Kedra Ishop, Vice Provost and Director of Admissions, UT Austin Colleges and universities look for students with the qualities and experiences of IB students.

RISING JUNIORS QUESTION: Which North Hills students are “IB Students”?

17 ALL North Hills students are IB students.
ANSWER: ALL North Hills students are IB students. IB Continuum School PYP (K-5) Exhibition MYP (6-10) Personal Project 11-12 Theory of Knowledge Extended Essay CAS

18 So the choice is, should I be
UNHP IB “Certificate” Can take AP courses sophomore & junior years CAS, TOK, EE junior & senior years Can take AP & IB Diploma courses senior year or UNHP IB Diploma AP courses sophomore & junior years CAS, TOK, EE junior & senior years Finish 6 IBDP Courses (3 HL, 3 SL) senior year

19 What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma?
International Admissions Credential Over 3,690 IB authorized schools in 147 countries* 226 IB continuum schools in world, 36 in North America* 0.12% of Texas students take IB exams+ *Source IB Website, Referenced 15 Jan 2014 +Source TEA Report on AP & IB Exam results,

20 The IB Diploma Is NOT a replacement for the North Hills Diploma.
Grades in NHP DP classes are not based upon grades on IB exams (though NHP grades should correlate with student preparedness for IB exams). It is possible to get the NHP Diploma but not the IB Diploma (and vice-versa).

23 The IB “Core” and UNHP requirements
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Connects all the IB subjects together TOK Essay and Presentation Extended Essay (EE) 4000 word collegiate level research paper Creativity/Action/Service (CAS) Creative Endeavors Physical Activity Service Learning

24 Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
Connects subjects together: Mathematics Natural Science Human Science The Arts Religious Knowledge Systems Indigenous Knowledge Systems Ethics History We discuss questions like: Can art be fundamentally good or bad? How complete is the picture of the world that science provides us? How much do ethical decisions depend on society and individuals? Does our view of history change over time?

25 Extended Essay (EE) The essay is approximately 4000 words.
Students are expected to put in 40 hrs of work. Topics are limited to the UNHP subject areas. Students craft a narrowly focused research question, develop an extended argument supported by research, and make valid conclusions. An EE may not be duplicated by the student for other assessments submitted to IB (i.e. TOK Essay, History IA, etc.).

26 EE Titles Attitudes toward human spirituality in Goethe’s Faust and Marlow’s Dr. Faustus How does Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin reflect the time period’s transition from neo- classical to romantic writing styles? The historical influence of Mithraism on the early development of Christianity To what extent did Woodrow Wilson’s Latin American policy reflect the ideals presented in the Fourteen Points? Throughout the course of the years , how important were the contributions of Islamic architecture to Spanish architecture?

27 EE Titles The Epicurean ideals of morality and the afterlife in comparison to views on morality in J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings How does the carbon to nitrogen ratio of seeded sludge affect the biogas production of batch digesters? What is the effect of fertilizer on population growth in freshwater Chlorella How does temperature and saccharide type affect the metabolism and growth of these four basic cultures: Serratia Marcesens, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus lueus and Bacillus subtilis?

28 Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
Creativity: involves a wide range of fine arts and design activities. Activity: includes participation in individual and team sports, expeditions, and physical training. Service: involves community or social service for others. 1-3 hours of CAS per week with reflection. Students must document their activities on ManageBac

29 CAS Learning Outcomes Increased your awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth Undertaken new challenges Planned and initiates activities Worked collaboratively with others Shown perseverance and commitment in your activities Engaged with issues of global importance Considered the ethical implications of their actions Developed new skills

30 IB Diploma Requirements
Complete Core Elements (TOK, CAS, EE) Take Three Higher Level and Three Standard Level Courses One Course (HL or SL) From Each Subject Group Each course two years in length, except in some cases students can choose to take one SL course in a single year. At North Hills the first year of IB courses are often integrated with AP courses.

31 Sample IB Diploma English A1 Higher Level French B Standard Level
History of the Americas Higher Level Biology Higher Level Math Studies Standard Level Visual Arts Standard Level

32 EARNING THE IB DIPLOMA 42 Exam Points 3 Core Points 45 Total Points
24 Points to Receive Diploma

33 Earning the IB Diploma Earning the IB DIPLOMA = 24 Points
4 / 7 points for each subject is passing. If you earn more than three 3s, you do not receive the diploma. Also, students must achieve 12 points total in their HL classes to get the diploma. These facts alone make HL courses very important. If you achieve an E (elementary) in TOK or on the EE, then it is considered to be a failing condition (i.e. no diploma). Not enough CAS is also a failing condition (i.e. no diploma).
