Railing Analysis of Magazine 3

Representation On the magazine front cover you can see the main cover line that says “Sweet Dreams.” This is obviously relation to the image on the magazine which most people will know to be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so even though you don’t actually see the title of the film you can still tell what film it is. The masthead of the magazine is a good indicator to the genre of the magazine as “Sight and Sound” is the kind of title that relates to media. When you consider the denotation of ‘Sweet Dreams’ it appears to be linking to something the is obviously in the magazine. However, when considering the connotation of these words it becomes apparent that is linked to the image as most people know that he is from a film that is about sweets. Therefore making it relevant to the cover image.

Audience The audience for this magazine appears to be people who enjoy films. We know this as it if a film magazine. I also get the impression that maybe young adults would enjoy this magazine due to the types of font used and the style of writing. For example it is very short and snappy so could also be aimed at those who have a busy lifestyle.

Institution The kind of institution that this magazine fits in to are the kinds that release information about films. So this can mean magazines such as Empire and Little White Lies. The current publisher of the magazine is the British Film Institute. The BFI aim to encourage the development of the arts of film, television and the moving image throughout the United Kingdom.

Language On the cover of this magazine we can see:
Main image- The main image here is there to capture their specific audience as they have used a very famous person in character. They have done this because it widens the target audience. It is also giving away some of what will be in the magazine as most people will know who it is and what film he is from. Main cover line- ‘Sweet Dreams’ is the main cover line here and is used as it is a pun in relation to the film that is being featured in the magazine. Cover lines- The cover lines here are simply providing information about what you will find in the magazine. Mast head- The mast head is the title of the magazine itself. This is something that is usually stays the same in order to keep the magazine familiar for its readers.

Language Continued… Puff- This is similar to the cover lines but is normally showing something new. Dateline and cover price- These are normally in the same places in order to keep the magazine in its original format. However thy are sometimes moved so that the main image can fit the page properly. Barcode- Same as the dateline and cover price.

Ideology The ideology of magazine front covers will always vary depending on the content of the magazine itself. For example, on the front of the cover we can see a man and the word “Sweet” next to him. Some may say that this is not what you may expect from a male character and is therefore indicating that this main character is different to what you may expect. This is because men are not typically described as sweet.

Narrative The character type in this image is someone who you would believe to be one of the protagonists in the film. We also know that it is Johnny Depp who is incredibly famous and is known for being a versatile actor. This image shows that as he has his hair and make up done to make him look very feminine. It is either showing that or that he is supposed to be in touch with his feminine side.

Genre The genre here is magazine. The sub genre being films. We can see the normal conventions of a magazine as listed in language. These are used to provide the reader with the familiar feel of a magazine and also to provide them with the information they want. However this cover does also challenge conventions as the main image is underneath the magazines title. Many magazines, such as Empire, put the image in front of the title to show that the topic of the image is something incredible.
