3 August 31, 2010 1st meeting of the semester
The committee has been in existence for 4 years now (!) Finalized and approved by-laws New members: Nicole Perkins, Michaele Postell, Shebbie Murray and Sandra Parks Nominations for Chair and Secretary were discussed

4 September 28, 2010 New member from TPS introduced: Kisha Williams
Diana Gregory and Christine Collins were elected co-chairs Goal 6 was explained for the benefit of new members It was suggested that Interim Chief Diversity Officer, Linda Lyons, be invited to a meeting

5 October 26, 2010 Newest member from VA introduced: Selina Walker
Icebreaker “Who I am” activity Updates to website discussed Guest speaker series idea introduced Plans for the November open meeting solidified Include action steps from March ‘10 open meeting

6 November 30, 2010 Open Meeting In the 3/30/10 Open Meeting it was suggested that the committee broaden the diversity conversation Action steps: guest speakers, update FAQs on website, develop video or interview for website Guest speaker: Megan Kellogg-Gwinn from Undergraduate Admissions

7 November 30, 2010 Open meeting, continued
Undergraduate Admissions Minority Enhancement Program (MEP) KSU awarded $50,000 each year for 3 years to implement targeted PR campaign to reach under-represented groups, specifically African–Americans and Hispanics Admissions used the money for bilingual information sessions, financial aid workshops, SAT prep workshops Outreach to minority high schools, Hispanic parent nights and African American church youth programs, college fairs KSU now has 22% minority student population

8 January 25, 2011 Newest member from Dance introduced: Joshua Schadl
Guest speaker: Carol Pope from DisAbled Student Services The office helps students to obtain appropriate documentation and receive services for success Provides individual and group support to students Disabilities cover a wide spectrum from physical to learning disabilities Group activity handouts demonstrated the different types of disabilities students may have

9 January 25, 2011 continued Guest speaker: Cheryl Anderson Brown from COTA public relations office Discussed website and goals of the committee Video clips of student experiences discussed Website to move from internal use to external site Goal 6 approved and attached to strategic plan

10 February 22, 2011 Guest speakers: Dr. Greta Kugler and Susan Ristau from Counseling Services. Students are eligible for 16 sessions/year Unlimited group sessions 24/7 crisis coverage, Behavioral Response Team Counseling is confidential, except in cases of abuse or potential to harm others Assist with mental disorders, behavioral disorders, PRIDE group, career counseling

11 February 22, 2011 continued COTA video update:
Filming session with MDG March 17 Stills will be used, as well as real-time footage Plan to update clip four times a year Potential questions to interviewees reviewed Additional plans: survey and follow-up workshops in the Fall highlighting our guest speakers from this year

12 March 22, 2011 Guest speaker: Linda Lyons, Interim Chief Diversity Officer Website: Website includes programs, curriculum, presidential commissions, news and events, and resources Diversity office can assist our committee with diversity workshops for the College of the Arts Ms. Lyons described diversity as “awareness of differences”, but she re-examines that definition every day. She stated once you put people in categories, the purpose of having a focus on diversity is problematic. How do we avoid stereotyping?

13 March 22, 2011 continued Iceberg metaphor: we see the tip of the iceberg, the thing that makes us different, but if you dig deeper, you see that we are all human and part of the same race. The challenge is working our way down the iceberg. Chief Diversity Advisory Committee put in place by the USG, and works with the Board of Regents. Top three diversity issues encountered by the USG: recruitment and retention, immigration, changes in HOPE scholarship. Apply diversity issues to the gen ed curriculum?
