1 Honors Chemistry: October 29th

2 Do Now: Identify the following as cations or anions and tell me how many protons and electrons each has: Ca+17 Na+12 Ag-19 Au-2 Ce+12

3 Agenda L.T. I can review and get inside Mr C’s head to write a test.
Do Now Agenda Trends on the periodic table Some notes on some structural stuff Some other stuff H.W.: Review Chapter 6 test Test Tomorrow

4 There is one final trend I want to talk about
Electronegativity On the following slide is a periodic table with the electronegativities of all the elements. On the same piece of paper with the other explanations, I want you to identify the patterns in a group and a period and offer an explanation as to why this might be the case.

5 Electronegativity

6 What is the deal with electronegativity?
Electronegativity is the desire of an atom to hold onto its electrons. It tells us how well it attracts electrons. Is there a link between the ability of an atom to become an ion and the electronegativity of the atom? Can this help us predict which atoms become ions?

7 Electronegativity I want you to add all of the electronegativities to your periodic table

8 Using your knowledge of my tests…….
You are going to write your own. I want you do create a test using the SAT II questions and write four or five short answer questions. Your goal is to get inside my head. You will be given a set of the multiple choice questions you should be using to study. I want you to create a test that has 8-10 matching, 3-5 True, false, and mc, and 4 or 5 short answers. You should try to have questions of varying difficulty. Some should be easy, some should be hard. The harder questions generally require you to apply what you have learned in a new and off putting way you have never seen before.

9 Review: Count off by fives Send one person to grab a white board
Send another to grab a white board marker

10 Question One Which atom is the largest? Why?

11 Question Two He is smaller than Ne, Why?

12 Question Three What are the differences between cations and anions?

13 Question Four What six properties of metals?

14 Question Five Why is it harder to remove the electrons from smaller atoms?

15 Question Six Metalloids are neither metals nor non-metals, how do they behave?

16 Question Seven How would you identify a non-metal based on its properties? What about a metal?

17 Question Eight What is electronegativity? How is it related to the idea of ions?

18 Question 9 What is electron shielding? What does it do?

19 Question 10 Why is it easier to remove an electron farther from the nucleus?

20 Question 11 Why does Oxygen have a lower first ionization energy than Nitrogen?

21 For questions I want the answer, and a brief 2 sentence explanation.

22 It has the same number of protons and electrons
Ca is a neutral atom II It has the same number of protons and electrons BECAUSE An element (X) with an atomic number of 16 has 14 electrons in X-2 Two protons bind the two outermost electrons BECAUSE Density T,F F,T

23 The number of electrons outside their nuclei
Two different sodium atoms or ions may differ in all of the following ways EXCEPT The number of electrons outside their nuclei The overall charge they carry Their mass numbers The number of neutrons in their nuclei The number of protons in their nuclei Conversion D

24 35 neutrons, 35 protons, 34 electrons
Which of the following combinations represents an element with a net charge of +1 with a mass number of 75? 35 neutrons, 35 protons, 34 electrons 40 neutrons, 40 protons, 39 electrons 40 neutrons, 35 protons, 34 electrons 37 neutrons, 38 protons, 39 electrons 40 neutrons, 35 protons, 35 electrons Conversion D

25 Of the following statements about the number of subatomic particles in an ion of 3216S-2, which are true? I. 16 protons II. 14 neutrons III. 18 electrons II only III only I and II only I and III only I, II and III Substance B

26 Which of the following substances are liquids at room temperature?
I. Hg II. Br2 III. Si I only II only I and II only II and III only I , II, and III Safety C

27 The modern periodic table is arranged based upon atomic
Isotopes Number Density Radius Mass Scientific method C

28 Which of the following is NOT true regarding nickel, Ni?
It is malleable It is ductile It is lustrous It is an insulator It forms colored compounds Scientific method C

29 An element has the following properties: shiny, brittle, poor electrical conductivity, and high melting point. This element can be best classified as a Alkali metal Halogen Metalloid Transition metal Noble gas Scientific method C

30 Which group contains elements in the solid, liquid and gas phases at 298K and 1 atm?
16 17 18 Scientific method C
