APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY
BUILDING MATERIALS APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY
2
WHAT FACTORS PLAY A ROLE IN ARCHITECT’S CHOSING MATERIALS?
Climate where building is constructed Types and cost of materials available Technology available for construction Skills of construction team
3
WHAT FACTORS PLAY A ROLE IN ARCHITECT’S CHOSING MATERIALS?
Economics Sustainability of materials Visual/artistic decisions Efficient manufacturing and transportation of materials to site
4
LEED & USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) are at the forefront of sustainable/green design. LEED is a set of voluntary national standards created by the USGBC to develop high-performance sustainable buildings.
5
LEED & USGBC USGBC is a group of building industry leaders working to promote buildings that are Environmentally responsible Profitable Healthy places to work/live
6
LEED & USGBC LEED Certifications LEED Credit Categories
There are levels for LEED certification. LEED Certified is the lowest level. LEED Platinum is the highest level of certification. Most LEED Certified buildings have a seal to show the level of certification. Credit Categories are areas in which a designer may make his or her building LEED Certified.
7
RENOVATIONS vs ADAPTIVE REUSE
Altering or adding to a property to meet changing uses Changing the function of a building a building while keeping the overall structure mainly in tact
8
EXAMPLES OF ADAPTIVE REUSE BUILDINGS
Power Plant Baltimore, MD The Power Plant used to be an actual power station (built in 1900) operated by the United Railways and Electric Company.
9
EXAMPLES OF ADAPTIVE REUSE BUILDINGS
Loft Apartments Los Angeles, CA In Los Angeles, this old toy factory has been converted to Loft Apartments. Some people appreciate an “Industrial” style (exposed pipes, ductwork, etc.) with their homes.
10
LIFE CYCLE OF A MATERIAL vs LIFE SPAN OF A MATERIAL
Amount of energy consumed and waste produced in acquiring, processing, packing, distributing, installing, using, maintaining, and disposing of a building material Average length of time a building material will last with regular maintenance
11
RAW MATERIALS AND BYPRODUCTS
Raw materials are the natural materials used in making a final product. A byproduct is the leftover product made during the production of or as a result of a main product.
12
BYPRODUCTS Meat production Gelatin Leather
All these things are created from the byproducts of slaughtering livestock/cattle. Gelatin is created from boiled skin and other parts of livestock. Leather is created from the skin/hides of livestock. Nubuck used for Timberland boots is a top-grain cattle leather that has been sanded or buffed to create a velvet like finish. Leather
13
BYPRODUCTS Petroleum Asphalt
Asphalt used in paving and shingles is a created from refining petroleum.
