2 Think about the early years of the Middle Ages.
After Charlemagne, there was no central gov’t. There were individual kingdoms Viking raids caused fear During the later years of the Middle Ages, government grew stronger and the economy improved, there was more time for LEARNING

3 Cathedral Schools - Prepared sons of nobles for service in the church or to be gov’t workers, lawyers, & teachers.

4 2. Universities - Groups of students and teachers devoted to learning.

5 ~ The Age of Faith ~ The Middle Ages is also known as the Age of Faith because religion was so important. Built cathedrals = large, elaborate churches in the shape of a cross

10 Many people at this time could not read or write.
Decorated the cathedrals with beautiful stained glass windows = “Bibles for the Poor” Many people at this time could not read or write. The windows showed stories from the Bible so that the people could follow along with the church service simply by looking at the beautiful windows even though they could not read.

11 Stained glass windows often told of stories from the Bible and featured religious figures.

12 Some windows were not religious and instead, they showed important people and events of the time.
