Purpose of procedure: To ensure the proper disposal of medical waste by both staff and students of TUT
Scope of procedure: Apply to all staff and students
Definitions: Sharps – Needles, syringes, scalpel blades and vials.
Non-sharp health-care waste – gloves, cotton and bandages.
Expired pharmaceuticals – old pills and medicine.
SANUMED- company that collects medical waste

Expired pharmaceuticals placed in boxes and kept in storage until collected by SANUMED
Sharps –disposed into the sharps container SANUMED yellow container
Non-sharps disposed of into boxes lined with red plastic bag
All waste should be kept safely in a place that is kept locked until collection
