9 Romainville Multimedia Library / Philippe Gazeau - France

10 The Romainville multimedia library is located in the heart of a
dormitory town that is being completely renovated. The new building floats between two flying carpets. Following a continuous movement, the multimedia library’s volume sweeps over the level of the street and the public garden to slide under the gentle slopes of its planted roof.

11 The roof’s hills and valleys transmit the movement through to
the level of the central plain, crossing through the large reading room on the upper floor. As well as traversing, the oriented interior space of the reading room overlooking the street and garden is also traversed and suspended by the landscape as it rises up to become the ceiling.

12 It is a building ‘hierarchized’ on the basis of 3 superimposed horizontal sequences:
a base on the ground floor, a large metal covered hall on the first floor supported on both the street side and the garden side, lastly a topographically undulating vegetated roof. These three main elements structure and bring together the building’s architectural and functional image.

13 A second mezzanine floor houses the
multimedia area: on the ‘Russian doll’ principle, this area readily accessible from the adult and children’s sections hovers slightly above the rest of the browsing areas for reasons of soundproofing, while remaining highly visible and attractive from the central area.

14 Chelles Multimedia Library

15 The multimedia library is supported by existing structures: the cultural centre, but also the lines drawn by roads or trees.. There is a continuity between the multimedia library entry hall and that of the cultural centre. The two volumes are lined up, ordered together to enable functional connections between the two sites.

16 The "free platforms" design for the reading rooms creates great freedom to walk around the centre and help to distinguish the different spaces. These successions of spaces bring with them variations in lighting and openings, alternating window frames with large bay windows, lattices and skylights. An emphasis is given to natural light throughout the building.

17 The multimedia library is made up of reading rooms
divided into two main poles and spread over two levels, and a 230 seat auditorium.

18 These two entities can be accessed through the multimedia library hall
These two entities can be accessed through the multimedia library hall. The “U" design provides double access: the reading areas open out either onto the city or the inner courtyard which is created by this shape.

19 ALBERT CAMUS MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY

20 The Albert Camus Multimedia Library and the Albert Magnard Conservatory are the result of exploration into a building’s filters, skin and volume. The façade’s texture rustles like foliage and filters the exterior light.

21 Here, everything is designed so that the user can work in peace, and communicate within the building. The idea of e hub of information responds to the needs of the different areas but also to the open general space. Inside, the multimedia library takes up the whole of the hall. Large and light, you can see the whole collection in one go.

22 From the hall you can see the reference room, with the adult and youth collections. Shelves, tables and storage space define the work area and the passageways. As well as this main room, there are three “alcoves”; the records room, the music and reading room and an area dedicated to storytelling.

24 ALICE WONDERLAND MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY
Inspired by the similarity of experiencing a new world through digital media and falling into a wonderland, the design of this multimedia library combines interior space with the story of “Alice in Wonderland”.

25 The two central pillars symbolize the virtual and the real respectively. The present age of digital media development is represented with sensitivity.

26 Alice Wonderland is a space of culture and rest in addition to functioning as a library. It is the result of actively satisfying students' demands for mini-theaters for couples, a large movie theater, satellite corners, DVD desks and Internet desks, etc.
