Tribe we’re studying: The Lenape
Different Native American tribes lived across the United States We’re studying the life and culture of one tribe: The Lenape This tribe lived in the Northeast Woodlands region of the country

Geography/Clime (land & weather)
Hot summers, cold winters, rainy springs Filled with forests, mountains, lakes, rivers, streams, and the ocean Wet, swampy, and grassy

Relationship with Nature
The Lenape loved nature and cared for it as if it were a member of their family They believed the spirits lived in nature (think back to the song, “Colors of the Wind”) They depended on nature to survive and meet their needs, and only took what they needed

*To meet these needs, the Lenape relied on natural resources (things found in nature) and everyone in the tribe had different jobs (roles)*

Meeting Basic Needs Food hunting, trapping, fishing, planting gardens, gathering fruits Shelter used bark of trees to build wigwams and long houses Clothing animal skin

The settlers came… People from Europe (settlers) began to come to the land the Lenape lived on, forcing the Lenape to live somewhere else These settlers wanted to live on the land and take more than what they needed from nature (ex: killing animals for fur) This is something the Lenape disagreed with *major cause of conflict: LAND/treatment of nature*
