As sources for recycled materials create greater and more efficient supply, cost will be less than mining natural resources. “We need to make it easy to manage export and sales of materials”
12
12 What we need... “We need an easy way to locate, procure, and import low cost materials” “We need a cross-reference parts database with RoHS and WEEE classifications” “Logistics, distribution, and retail need to be involved” “We need to help consumers recycle.” “We need to make it easy for collectors.” “Call Centers should be able to refer and schedule service providers and collectors.” “Service providers should be able to become collectors and link with recyclers” “We need an online marketplace for Asset Recovery, part and material sales” “We need to make it easy to manage export and sales of materials” In addition “We need easy government reporting for manufacturers, recyclers, and collectors” “We need to empower each participant with access to data and interaction” “We need to enable the constituents with legacy systems, or no systems at all” “We need to evolve standards that allow regional regulations and compliance”
13
13 Collectors Rapidly growing business segment has no standard applications, or electronic file format Collectors collect retired products and coordinate pick-up or delivery with recyclers. Collectors hold collection events, or pick-up and deliver to recyclers. This is the ‘middle man’ There are a growing number of part-time collectors consisting of students, retired persons, entrepreneurs, and temporarily out of work persons There are diverse laws and regulations changing rapidly, so standards and communication are critical
14
14 Recyclers Recyclers collect, sort, and manage materials. Communication, connectivity, & control needed May or may not include refurbishing or downstream materials reclamation. Most recyclers currently do not collect brand related information, although manufacturers are being held accountable by popular government regulations Most applications are “home grown” in-house systems, not standardized solutions Existing software to manage inventory by model does not support transition to inventory by weight
15
15 Asset Recovery Growing marketplace for auctions and sales requires communication and export controls It is a global community for buying and selling Retired computers in one region may have tremendous value in another region Fluctuations in currency are drastically changing perceptions of a ‘good deal’ Fluctuations in fuel prices are also changing perceptions on what is considered a ‘good deal’ Material is a form of recovery
16
16 Material Reuse There is a quietly growing market for material reclaimed from retired products Supply for materials from natural resources is gradually diminishing, increasing cost and environmental impact. Demand for new electronic product and goods also continues to rise. Supply of retired electronics increases at almost the same rate as demand, since new product typically replaces old. Old product is the new renewable resource for materials – but we need to connect partners.
17
17 Consumers Consumers want to behave in an environmentally considerate manner, but it must be easy Consumers are not familiar with the regulations Consumers are being educated about the importance of electronic and electrical waste, but participating in recycling can be confusing or inconvenient Manufacturers, call centers, and retailers are working to develop solutions, but there are no national networks of recyclers to refer Education, referrals, and simple solutions needed
18
18 Manufacturers Manufacturers typically receive the greatest burden to recycle the products they produce There are many established routines and partners for managing product returns, but very limited routines and no standards for recycling solutions Reverse Logistics continues beyond the return of the product, so it is necessary to establish the complete end-of-life reverse logistics plan that includes refurbishment, parts, and materials Like return centers and service providers, recyclers need an established and standardized network
19
19 Government Governments are creating new laws, but may not have the infrastructure to support them Often, recyclers or manufacturers are required to report to the government with PAPER forms Although legislation is increasing, it is also increasingly difficult to enforce due to paperwork Material theft is on the rise. Investigation and control requires real time accurate data The global demand for refurbished goods and reclaimed materials requires export controls and visibility
20
20 Production Manufacturing and production needs low cost material resources, finding them is a challenge We need to cross-reference common parts and identify RoHS / WEEE classification to empower greater utilization of parts and reclamation of materials We need to connect material buyers to material sellers, and coordinate with logistics partners to manage the process efficiently to reduce the burden of freight

23 The result... An easy way to locate, procure, and import low cost materials Cross-reference parts database with RoHS and WEEE classification Logistics, distribution, and retail are involved and share benefit Help consumers recycle with education, events, locations, and points of contact Easy for collectors (full business or part-time collectors) Call Centers refer and schedule service providers and collectors Service providers can become collectors and link with recyclers A common online marketplace for Asset Recovery, part and material sales Manage export controls and tracking for sale of material In addition Electronic government reporting for manufacturers, recyclers, and collectors Each participant empowered with access to data and interaction Constituents can connect with legacy systems, or use ZSL application Evolving standards allow flexibility for regional regulations and compliance
