Caring for a dog in the winter is a multi-pronged effort that will require some thought & preparation.

Winter takes a toll on our pet dog's health & the skin is one of the most vulnerable parts of their body.

Let us look at some of the ways through which we can ensure better skincare for our dog during winter. Less bathing, but regular grooming Good nutrition Clothes for safety Watch out for skin infections Taking care of the paws 1 2 3 4 5

Bathing must be limited and moisturizing shampoos should be used as they prevent the skin from getting dry & rough.

Soft bristle brushes should be used to remove the loose hairs & increase the blood circulation of the skin.

Regular grooming for 10 minutes a day is considered ideal for dogs in winter.

In winter dogs must be given food rich in omega-3 & omega-6, as these fatty acids help in maintaining healthy skin.

Healthy skin appears plump & looks rejuvenated and if the pet's skin appears dry & flaky, then a vet must be consulted for changes in diet.

You can make your pet wear a sweater or jacket to protect his skin from the extreme cold while going outside.

But, not all breeds need winter protective clothing & wearing clothes all the time can rub their haircoat off.

Dog's should wear sweater/jacket depending on the cold outside, and how much they are genetically prepared to withstand the cold weather.

Pups, older & unwell dogs or dogs with a heart problem should be kept warm all the time with blanket or sweaters.

If your pet suffers from skin infections or any sort of kidney or liver diseases, hormonal imbalance, or malnourishment then it adversely affects his skin.

Itching, red spots, dry skin, and bald patches are some of the signs associated with skin infections in dogs.

In the winter, roads & sidewalks can be extremely dangerous for our pet, & we have to ensure that their paws are well protected against the surface.

If the dog has furry feet, then, we have to trim the fur that grows between his pads to prevent ice build up.

After a walk, we should rinse or wipe their paws to remove any salt, and rub an all natural paw salve to heal dry & cracked pads.

Dog booties along with an ice-melter that's safe & won't burn their paws can be used to protect their paws.
