Definition: the speech or writing that departs from the literal meaning Purpose: Enhances imagery Ex- The flowers waltzed in the gentle breeze. Adds emotional intensity Ex- My feet are killing me. to be more concise Ex- Her life passed her by.

Ex-love is like the wind Metaphor Comparison of unlike things to highlight similarities Ex-life is a roller coaster Personification Giving attributes of a human being to an object, animal or concept Ex- Whispering wind or the dancing flames
