Vocabulary defiance (ch 5) – an open disregard for authority
ration(ch 5) – A fixed amount of a supply given to each person during a time of shortage, as in wartime: "the bread ration". ghetto-(ch 5) – A part of a city occupied by a minority group or groups. Usually a slum. During WWII, Jewish quarter of the city was the ghetto.

Symbolism: an object in the story that represents a feeling or idea. The author uses symbolism to reinforce themes and messages in the book

Turn and Talk: What do you think the fence is protecting? The word “safe” is repeated. Turn and Talk: Why does the mother think it is not safe? Look at this picture.
