Redding East Rotary DUCKY DERBY
How does this all happen?
2
The Ducky Derby is a year round event
In January we begin contacting potential sponsors and prize donors to help fund the race. These sponsors are key to the race. IN KIND Sponsors: provide services such as media advertising, raft rentals, prizes Cash Sponsors: Cover our out of pocket costs like shipping, duck rental, t-shirts, this luncheon
3
Once prizes & sponsors are secured, we can print the tickets
4
Some past prizes! Shasta Marina at Packers Bay
5
We rent the ducks from GAME “Great American Merchandising Events” in Phoenix .
The cost is about $13,000 Phoenix
6
The Ducks are shipped from either Phoenix or the last race
The Ducks are shipped from either Phoenix or the last race. It can be really expensive! Some of The costs have been donated in the past
7
They arrive at Meeks Lumber
8
Rotarians prepare the duck stickers for the actual duck sticking the night before. Many hands make light work just like with Christmas baskets and the Shasta Dam Bridge ride!
9
Duck Sticking is a community event with over 100 volunteers
10
So many people working together to support the race!
11
Teamwork!
12
Lots of ways to attack the task!
13
Rotary is a family affair!
14
Numbering the boxes is very important
Numbering the boxes is very important. We don’t want to put too many ducks in the box
15
Ducks that are adopted as of Wednesday are dumped into the box
We are so grateful for Shasta College and Simpson College students’ help! There are a LOT of boxes! To get around ducks is (about 220 boxes!) Larry can only carry 100!
16
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Count Drukula
and his team are “input-ing” ducks and counting money
17
The day of the Race the box is loaded up to go to the river
18
Drugs Are Dumb Don’t Use That’s the message from DADDU, our Ducky Derby Duck
20
There has been lots of fun at the park on Race Day
21
Setting the net is a tricky endeavor!
22
Top Seller students are treated to a birds eye view from the river!
23
Scoopers get ready to go out in the rafts to catch the ducks!
24
Getting ready on the bridge!
25
Getting ready for the count down!
26
There they go!!
27
Ducks away!!
28
Another bird’s eye view!
29
And the race is on!!!
30
There are some fast swimmers out there!
31
Bringing in the ducks ! Oops, better use those legs!
32
Counting to 160 per box!
33
Clean up!!
34
Some folks are better supervisors!!
35
After the winning Ducks are pulled, the Count Drukula team finalize the winners by matching the number on the Ducks to the ticket sold. Thanks to Andy Main at Shasta.com our system is almost 100% automated!
36
Taking down the net, putting it away and the rest of the clean up takes a few more hours. We have some pretty tired Rotarians at the end of the day!
37
Show me the money!!!
38
TH th thAT’S ALL, FOLKS
39
NOT!! We are already working on the 29th event. It could be different but the results will be the same: A Partnership between the youth and adults of our community to support substance abuse prevention and youth development. Our youth are our future!
