PAST SIMPLE TENSE REGULAR VERBS + ED/D (PLAYED,LOVED)
IRREGULAR VERBS: THE SECOND COLUMN GO/WENT/GONE She went to the cinema last night. Did she go to the cinema last night? She didn’t go to the cinema last night.

We use the Past Simple Tense for:
- An action that occurred at a definite time (stated or implied) in the past. Example: The postman delivered the parcel at 8 o’clock yesterday. Actions that happened immediately after one another in the past. Example: She opened the door and let her friends in.

For habitual actions or behaviour in the past.
Example: She worked as a teacher when she was younger. USED TO can be used instead of the Past Simple Tense for habits/repeated actions in the past. Adverbs: yesterday, then, when, two/five/ten days ago, last night/week/month/October, in 1990

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE WAS/WERE + ING-FORM She was watching... Was she watching...? She wasn’t watching...

We use the Past Continuous Tense for:
- Temporary activities or situations in progress at a particular moment in the past. Example: This time last week we were sitting on the beach. A past activity or situation which was already in progress when another action occurred. Example: I was reading a book when the lights went out.

Activities or situations occurring at the same time.
Example: Ann was cutting the grass while I was cooking The background events in a narrative. Example: It was snowing heavily and a cold wind was blowing. Adverbs: while, when, as, all morning/evening/night, the whole day, at 6 o’clock yesterday morning, this time last week/month...

PAST PERFECT TENSE HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE
We had done... Had we done...? We hadn’t done... She had worked.. Had she worked..? She hadn’t worked

We use the Past Perfect Tense for:
- An action which happened before another past action or before a stated time in the past. Example: She had finished her homework by 6 o’clock. When I saw Tim, he had just passed his driving test. An action that finished in the past and whose result was visible at a later point in the past. Example: He had sprained his ankle a few days earlier and he was still limping slightly. Adverbs: after, before, by the time, as soon as, when, once, until, already, just, for, since...

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
HAD BEEN + ING-FORM I had been washing... Had I been washing...? I hadn’t been washing...

We use the Past Perfect Continuous Tense:
To put emphasis on the duration of an action which started and finished in the past, before another action or stated time in the past, usually with for or since. Example: I had been walking for about half an hour when I realized I was completely lost. For an action which lasted for some time in the past and whose result was visible in the past. Example: She had been swimming and her hair was still wet. Adverbs: for, since, how long, before, until...
