Sub-Saharan Africa is more heavily affected by HIV and AIDS than any other region of the world. An estimated 22.4 million people are living with HIV in the region - around two thirds of the global total. In 2008 around 1.4 million people died from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and 1.9 million people became infected with HIV. Since the beginning of the epidemic more than 14 million children have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS.1

The Conflict The Darfur conflict is a complex crisis in the Darfur region of western Sudan. One side of the armed conflict is composed mainly of the Government sponsored Janjaweed, a militia group recruited mostly from the nomadic camel herding, Muslim Arab tribes of northern Sudan. The other side comprises a variety of rebel groups, notably the Sudan Liberation Movement recruited primarily from the Christian farming tribes of southern and eastern Sudan.
