2 Building the Quinzhee Outdoor Education 9 Emergency Shelter

3 Quinzhee Objective A simple shelter (hollowed out pike of snow) used to stay warm when camping in the winter.

4 TASK -7 to 8 feet high and big enough around PURPOSE -To prepare a comfortable living space for two people. STEP 1 THE SNOW PILE

5 TASK -Shape pile to a mound. - Insert sticks 1-2 ft thick. PURPOSE -Prepare wall thickness so mound doesn’t collapse. STEP 2 THE SNOW MOUND

6 STEP 3 HOLLOWING TASK -Dig inside dome. PURPOSE -Create living space with secure walls.

7 STEP 4 SNOWBEDS & TRENCH TASK -Use snow to create an elevated surface. - Dig trench between beds. PURPOSE -Create a sleeping space. -Promotes cold air flow down and out.

8 STEP 5 MARK THE ENTRANCE TASK -Place a large visible object at the entrance. PURPOSE -Know entrance in case it gets covered while you are away from shelter.
