2 Finite Deformation Patterns
The finite deformation patterns in the Figure occur in the flow fields of after 2 and 4 Ma assuming a characteristic geological strain rate of s-1. The maximum stretches at 4 Ma vary with the direction of plate motion and are largest for smaller ξ (see Weijermars (1991, JSG, v.11, p.1061) for detailed discussion of the difference in efficiency of pure and simple shear deformations). However, the finite strains in he Figure are close to 3, corresponding to those considered characteristic for orogenic strains (Pfiffner and Ramsay, 1982). Copyright © Alboran Media Group
