Sample Free Verse: Mother to Son Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, And splinter, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor— Bare. But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on And reachin’ landin’s And turnin’ corners, And sometimes goin’ in the dark Where there ain’t been no light. So, boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps ‘Cause you finds it kinder hard. Don’t you fall now— For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. -Langston Hughes Hughes, Langston. “Mother to Son.” Daybook. Sonnet My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun (Sonnet 130)
by William Shakespeare My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips' red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damasked, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go; My mistress when she walks treads on the ground. And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare.
