4 Silicon Valley and then the World
Philanthropic Trends Silicon Valley and then the World If it happens here, it will happen everywhere! Growth in the philanthropic sector as a whole Startup philanthropy Strategic philanthropy Corps and foundation giving is growing faster than individual giving – though all of philanthropy is growing more rapidly than ever before at a rate of over 5%. Startups are giving with purpose as a way to engage their workforce, connect with local communities, and contribute to social good. Philanthropic trends like impact investing and PRIs are encouraging creative partnerships and collaborations. How can the arts take advantage?

5 Define Local Local Arts Organizations
Accelerated globalization has led to a re-definition of “community” to include a broader focus.

6 Silicon Valley and the Arts?
Local Arts Organizations Silicon Valley and the Arts? Young Scrappy Hungry 5% of SVCF’s grantmaking between by 2016 went to arts and culture, totaling $217 million. As compared to the national average in 2014 of just over 7%. Art humanizes the experiences of Bay Area residents in ways that are digestible for “non-artists” therefore art here is a function of giving the community a voice in the face of great challenges. Diversity in experiences via community arts = conversations about equity Community-based arts orgs are thriving like never before, despite issues of displacement Shared art space

7 Arts Grantmaking The arts are fighting to stay relevant in a STEM-focused community. Why not STEAM? What can grantmakers do? Art creates meaning, which results in deeper engagement in whatever the task. In the Bay Area community, the tasks are hyper-focused on STEM without much of a regard for the long-term impact of dropping the A from that equation. Grantmakers must: Fund the arts, Look to support non-institutional arts orgs, and Adopt an emergent model of funding, different from the traditional model that tries to predict outcomes.
