Animal Lifestyles Unit 5

Language Learning Goal
Be able to define: Behave Behavior Survive

Content Learning Goal We will learn and be able to identify three types of animal behavior and: at least three examples of the types of homes animals have three ways animals get food to eat how different animals take care of their young and get along with each other

How Animals Behave Instinctive Behavior is what an animal already knows to do when it is born. Can you think of something animals know to do instinctively? Learned Behavior is what an animal has to learn by watching other animals. Can you think of something animals know to do because they learned how?

Trained Behavior Trained Behavior is what animals do because humans have trained them to do it. Can you think of some ways humans have trained animals to do certain things?

Different Ways to Live Some animals have no homes and move from place to place. Can you think of an animal like that? Some animals find homes. Bears find caves to live in. Can you tell me another example?

Different Ways to Live Some animals make homes. Beavers make lodges. Birds make nests. Can you think of other animals who build their homes?

What’s for Dinner? Some animals eat plants. Deer and bears are some of these animals. Some animals eat other animals by hunting or trapping their prey. Name some animals that hunt. Name some animals that trap their prey.

Bringing up Baby Some animals can survive by themselves from the moment they are born. Others need to be taken care of until they are older. Can you think of some examples of both?

Caring for Babies Adults care for their young by: Feeding them
Some hunt for food for their babies Some make milk to feed their babies

Caring for Babies Adults care for their young by: Protecting them
Some hide their young Some attack other animals that come near Some trick other animals to lead them away from their babies

Getting Along Some animals live in large groups. Fish swim in “schools” and birds form “flocks.” What are groups of other animals called? Some animals live off each other or help protect one another. This is called symbiosis.

Review Review the Matching Questions on Page 89 in your book and match the six answers to the correct questions.
