2. What is Phonics Screening?
The phonics screening is a quick and easy check to see where your child is with their phonological knowledge.
It is statutory – All children in Year 1 must take part.
Your child’s class teacher will be the adult leading the check.

3. What does the screening consist of?
Your child’s class teacher will work 1:1 with your child to complete the check. There is no time limit.
Children will be asked to read 40 words both real and nonsense words, through sounding and blending or by sight.
The threshold mark will not be published until the week after the check has been administered.
The results will be used to inform the teachers future planning.
You will be informed of your child’s mark in their end of year report.

5. Reporting to Parents
You will receive a Phonics Screening Check Pupils Report with your child’s annual end of year report.
If your child has not reached the expected level, they will re-take the check in Year 2.
They will receive support in Phonics throughout Year 2.

9. The importance of Phonics
A good knowledge of Phonics helps children to read unknown words.
It helps them to spell words they do not know.

10. Phonics as The Downley School
We teach Phonics for 30 minutes everyday in Year 1.
The children learn their Phonics in fast paced lessons as a whole class.
The children’s phonics knowledge is reinforced during our 1:1 reading sessions.
Interventions are provided for the children who need further support with previous phases.
We use the Letters and Sounds programme.

11. Phase 2
Children learn their first 19 phonemes: Set 1: s a t p Set 2: i n m d Set 3: g o c k Set 4: ck (as in duck) e u r Set 5: h b l f ff (as in puff) ll (as in hill) ss (as in hiss) They use these phonemes to read and spell simple “consonant- vowel-consonant” (CVC) words: sat, tap, dig, duck, rug, puff, hill, hiss

13. Phase 3
They learn another 26 phonemes:
j, v, w, x, y, z
zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure and er
They use these phonemes (and the ones from Phase 2) to read and spell words:
chip, shop, thin, ring, pain, feet, night, boat, boot

15. Saying the Correct Sounds
We encourage the children to articulate the sounds clearly and correctly.
It is important they do not shout or mispronounce the sounds.
To help your child say the correct sounds encourage them to listen to Jolly Phonics on YouTube.

(Phase 2) 4 (Phase 3)

17. Phase 4 Phase 4 doesn’t introduce any new phonemes.
It focuses on reading and spelling longer words with the phonemes they already know.
These words have adjacent consonants at the beginning: spot, trip, clap, green, clown.
Or at the end: tent, mend, damp, burnt.

18. Phase 5
The children learn new graphemes for reading: ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e The most important to remember is the split diagraphs: a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e and u-e

19. Split Diagraphs
They are cheeky letters that wont stop talking and have to be split up. ie, ee, oe, ue, ae e.g. pie- pine toe- tone

21. Phase 5- Alternative pronunciations
Children learn alternative pronunciations of graphemes (the same grapheme can represent more than one phoneme): fin/find, cat/cent, got/giant, cow/blow, tie/field, eat/bread, hat/what, yes/by/very, chin/school/chef, out/shoulder/could/you Encourage your child to check if they make sense in a sentence. e.g. I want to find a treasure chest.

22. How to help at home Read daily if possible
Recap on the phonic sounds (especially those they find tricky) daily if possible
Make learning phonics fun!
