Project 2: Straw Tower Situation: We should build a tower to support some weights. Design brief: To design and make a straw tower for practicing purpose Group : 3 or 4 members Duration: 3 cycles
2
Project 2: Straw Tower Material provided: Plastic Straws – 50 (200mm long) Masking Tape Requirement : 1) The tower must be constructed using only the straws and is fastened by masking tape provided, no other materials may be used. Masking tape is for fastening purpose only, not to be the parts of the structure. Straws may be cut or slit, if desired, and they may be bent in any manner desired.
3
Project 2: Straw Tower 2) The height of the tower will be measured before the loading process begins. To qualify the tower must be at least 40cm high. ≥40cm
4
Project 2: Straw Tower 3) The top of the tower must accommodate a load (250ml juice 250ml juice Juice Pack
5
Project 2: Straw Tower 4) The load will be placed on the highest part of the tower.
6
Project 2: Straw Tower 5) Teams will add additional mass loads in the form of loads to the tower until it collapses. All additional loads must be placed directly on top of the original load.
7
Project 2: Straw Tower Scoring: Height in cm times 1 point.
i.e. 1cm = 1 point 2. To qualify the tower must support 1 load for at least 3 seconds and the last load supported for a time of 3 seconds, i.e. the total number of loads counted, excluded the load at the time of collapse. There are totally 4 loads provided. Each extra load carries 10 points. = 10 points Juice Pack
8
Project 2: Straw Tower Measure the height of the tower.
Testing procedures : Measure the height of the tower.
9
Project 2: Straw Tower 2) Place the tower on the testing platform.
10
Project 2: Straw Tower 3) Place the loads one by one on the top of the tower until it collapses. Testing sample

Project 2: Straw Tower 3) Place the loads one by one on the top of the tower until it collapses. Testing sample
12
Project 2: Straw Tower 4) Count the number of loads used.
5) Calculate the total marks from the height of the tower and the number of loads supported.

Project 2: Straw Tower Reference Table:
3. No score will be given if no load can be supported or the tower height is less than 40cm. Total Point
17
Project 2: Straw Tower Assessment: e.g. The height of the tower = 64cm
height points = 64 Total number of loads = 4 Loading points = (4 – 1) x = 30 Points = = 94 85 and <95 9 Score = 9
