Courses designated as career, technical, trade or vocational by the local level should be taught by an individual holding: Designated Subjects (DS) Vocational or Career Technical Education (CTE) Credential in the appropriate occupation (subject) or industry sector

12. Course Defined
A course in career technical education means a course in a district-operated CTE program that is aligned to the CTE model curriculum standards and framework adopted by the state board

(a) A pupil shall complete all of the following while in grades 9 to 12, inclusive, in order to receive a diploma of graduation from high school: (ii) For purposes of this subparagraph, "a course in career technical education" means a course in a district-operated career technical education program that is aligned to the career technical model curriculum standards and framework adopted by the state board, including courses through a regional occupational center or program operated by a county superintendent of schools or pursuant to a joint powers agreement. (iii) This subparagraph does not require a school or school district that currently does not offer career technical education courses to start new career technical education programs for purposes of this section.

Possess a standard secondary, single-subject or designated-subject credential which authorizes the teaching of the CTE course(s) to which assigned, and
Can document employment experience, outside of education, in the career pathway addressed by the program or other evidence of equivalent proficiency

Appropriate credential and authorization
If a class is a CTE based class and the school district has a policy that allows granting graduation credits to the class per EC Section (b), then it may be taught by the holder of a credential authorizing the teaching of CTE in the specified industry sector.

May substitute one year of full-time general education K- 12 teaching experience in a public or private school for 1 year of work experience.

You have three years to clear a Designated Subjects Credential. Candidates must complete:
Early Orientation Course (must be done within the first 30 days)
Candidates must demonstrate competency in all Category II Program Standards

30. Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) Authorization
Authorization now added to Clear DS CTE issued under current standards
Equivalent to Certificate of Completion of Staff Development (CCSD) authorization for Designated Subject Credentials
CCSD Variable-Term Waiver Available to authorize SDAIE instruction while working on Preliminary with adequate progress toward Clear (new standards) or if previous DS CTE/Vocational Ed held while earning CCSD

31. National Board Certification
Teachers who are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards may apply directly to the Commission for a Clear teaching Credential by submitting:

34. OCDE CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) TEACHER CREDENTIAL PROGRAM
The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is an approved Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) Program Sponsor for the Designated Subjects (DS) CTE Credential. The program evaluates CTE credential applications and makes credential recommendations to CTC as well as providing a series of sequenced coursework that prepares new CTE candidates to become effective teachers.

First-Time Credential Program Candidates must:

at least one year of teaching experience while holding the original credential
two years of occupational experience in the specific industry sector for the credential they wish to obtain

37. Myth busters
The Designated Subject (DS) CTE teaching credential is only for ROP classes.
A teacher with a DS CTE credential cannot teach at a high school.
A teacher with a DS CTE credential cannot teach a-g courses.
A teacher with a previously issued DS in Vocational Education needs to earn the new DS in CTE to continue teaching.
