3 SATS Statutory Assessment Tests 2018
A new National Curriculum was introduced in 2014 and as a result, new tests have been created to assess against the new curriculum. 2015 was the last time the ‘old’ SATs were administered, and Year 2 pupils took the new tests for the first time in May This will be the third year of administering the new tests. The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations, which all schools have had to work hard to meet.

4 SATS Tests will be administered from 6th May 2018 to 24thMay 2018 during the first half of the Summer term. A timetable will be made available. Tests are administered in the classroom with class teacher. Tests form part of overall teacher assessment. Evidence collected by the class teacher together with the tests will contribute to the final assessment which is reported to parents in the end of year school report.

5 SATS If it is not appropriate for a child to take a test it is at the Head teacher’s discretion. Sample tests will be considered and pupils who are working below the standard of the tests will not take them. A discussion with the parent will be held. All other children must be given the opportunity to sit each test. They can be removed from the test if they are finding it too difficult. The LA will moderate 25% of schools.

6 Age Related Expectations
As part of the National curriculum review, levels have been abolished. From 2016, scaled scores have been used to report the outcomes of the new tests. Teacher assessment will continue to take place, and the scaled scores will be used to inform teacher assessment judgements. The raw score on each test (the total number of correct answers) will be converted to a scaled score which equates to 100. On the Government’s scale, 100 will always represent the ‘National Standard’.

7 Age Related Expectations
A child who achieves the national standard (a scaled score of 100 or above) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests and will have met age related expectations for the end of Key Stage 1. Full information about what the scaled score will be this year is not available until June 4th 2018 as the tests need to be taken and marked before the National Standard can be set. Results and assessments must be submitted by 28th June 2018.

8 Age Related Expectations
The expectation at the end of Year 2 is that the average pupil will achieve Age Related Expectations. Test scores are not reported to parents. The level achieved by each child in reading, writing and maths will be reported to parents as follows:- BLW Below the standard of the tests PKF Pre-Key Stage Foundations Working at foundations for the expected level WTS Working towards ARE EXS Working at ARE GDS Working at a deeper level

9 Age Related Expectations
Through appropriate curricular provision, we respect the fact that children:- Have different educational and behavioural needs Require different strategies for learning Learn and process information at different rates Need a range of different teaching approaches and experiences Not all children will achieve age related expectations, equally some children will be working at a deeper level within age related expectations

10 Tests and Teacher Assessment
English Reading Paper 1: Reading prompt and answer booklet (combined). The test takes approximately 30 minutes but is not strictly timed. The paper includes a list of useful words and some practice questions for teachers to introduce the context and question types. Paper 2: Reading booklet and reading answer booklet (separate) There are no practice questions on this paper. Teachers may use their discretion to stop the test early if a pupil is struggling. The test takes approximately 40 minutes to complete but is not strictly timed. The texts will cover a range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction.

11 Tests and Teacher Assessment
English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test (optional) Paper 1: Spelling Pupils spell a total of 20 missing words. The test is expected to take 15 minutes but is not strictly timed. Paper 2: Questions A combined question and answer booklet focussing on pupil’s knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Pupils will have approximately 20 minutes to complete the questions in the test, but it is not strictly timed.

12 Tests and Teacher Assessment
Writing There is no longer a formal writing test but writing will be assessed by the class teacher using the school’s current assessment procedures and the interim assessment frameworks produced by the Standards and Testing Agency. A new English framework has been introduced this year which includes a more flexible approach. Teachers can use their discretion to ensure that, on occasion, a particular weakness does not prevent an accurate judgement of a pupil’s overall attainment being made. For example, pupils with English as an additional language.

13 Tests and Teacher Assessment
Writing Revised ‘pupil can’ statements place a greater emphasis on composition, while statements relating to the more ‘technical’ aspects of English writing (grammar, punctuation and spelling) are less prescriptive.

14 Tests and Teacher Assessment
Maths Paper 1: Arithmetic Lasts approximately 20 minutes, but it is not strictly timed. It covers calculation methods for all operations. Paper 2: Reasoning Lasts for approximately 35 minutes, but it is not strictly timed. Pupils will still require calculation skills. Questions will be varied, including multiple choice, matching, true/false, completing a chart or table or drawing a shape. Some questions will also require children to show or explain their working out. There are no formal tests for science.

15 Examples of test questions
Practice materials can be downloaded from a number of sources. Just search for KS1 SATs papers

16 Year 2 Phonic Screening Those pupils who did not meet the threshold level of the Year 1 Phonic screening test will have to retake the test in Year 2. Testing will take place w/c 11th June and will be administered by the class teacher. Only those pupils who did not meet the pass threshold will retake the test. The result will be reported to parents with SATs results and the end of year report.

17 Helping at home First and foremost, reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and that they should always try their best. Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school. Support your child with any homework tasks. Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise. Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school today and what books they are reading (the plot, the characters, their opinion). Make sure your child has a good sleep and a healthy breakfast.
