1 Use of ECMWF data at KNMI:
Yorick de Wijs (also thanks to my colleagues), contact: Forecasters at the KNMI make use of ECMWF model data for issuing both short and long term weather forecasts for (general) aviation, the maritime sector and the general public in The Netherlands. Since January 2016, KNMI also provides meteorological and seismological services for the Caribbean Netherlands. Maritime Sector: surge warnings (General) Aviation: TAF-Guidance; indicating probability for the occurrence of different classes of visibility & cloud base during the TAF-forecast period. Water level probability forecasts for high and low tides along the coast of the Netherlands, based on the ECMWF-Ensemble. The color indicates the severity of the water surge and the related warning level. At WP = Warning level, there will be a meeting with hydrologists. Prog-Soundings General public: weather warnings & road conditions About the KNMI In the winter season the precipitation type and road conditions are an important factor, for which (among others) ECMWF-data is used (especially regarding the longer term). The KNMI is the Royal Dutch National, independent knowledge and data centre for weather, climate and seismology. It is founded by Buys-Ballot in 1854. Major operational weather forecasting tasks: Warnings for the general public in the Netherlands Aviation forecasts, especially for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, but also General Aviation (including balloonists, gliders) Winter road surface forecasts for the Dutch highways General marine forecasts and warnings Storm surge forecasts Type: Rain Rain/snow ‘Wet’ snow Snow Sleet Ice (road)
