AUGUST 23-25, 2017 Wednesday, 8/23: Welcome back and introductions; distribute syllabus and announce syllabus quiz (Monday 8/28); short New York Times article read and discuss. Thursday, 8/24: Syntax review and ‘You’ve Been Sentenced’ activity for practice. Friday, 8/25: New York Times article read, brief discussion and respond in a reflective writing.

AUGUST 28-SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 Monday: Journal prompt; read Shooting An Elephant essay by George Orwell and answer reading questions 1 and 3 (homework) Tuesday: Orwell Q’s due for partner share/compare; Large group discussion for the Orwell essay and questions Wednesday: Journal prompt; Orwell quiz Thursday: introduce SOAPSTone reading/annotating strategy and practice in large group with the Orwell essay Friday: grammar review pre-test

Tuesday: Assign Fall Semester Vocabulary Lists; Rhetorical Framework Diagram with notes and discussion Wednesday: Aristotle’s Modes of Persuasion guided notes in class Thursday: Review the modes of persuasion for quiz Friday: Rhetorical Framework Diagram and MOP Quiz

SEPTEMBER 11-15, 2017 Monday: Prose Q’s in analyzing a 9/11 passage
Tuesday: Identifying rhetorical appeals in the 9/11 passage Wednesday: Read ‘The Declaration of Independence’ and identify/discuss rhetorical appeals in small groups Thursday: Vocabulary Quiz List 1; Writing practice – developing the sentence paragraph Friday: New York Times article read, brief discussion and respond in a reflective quickwrite.

SEPTEMBER 18-22, 2017 Monday: Listen to Patrick Henry’s Speech to the Second Virginia Convention and identify the 3 main points made by Henry with a partner (must give the line or quote that introduces the point being made and a quote that supports the points). Tuesday: Rhetorical Analysis Practice – write 2-3 lines of commentary for each quote given to explain its effect on the audience. Students work in small groups and present in class. Wednesday: Read the Letters of Abigail Adams and answer questions. Thursday: Review readings from the DOI – Adams letters for test. Friday: Early American speeches and letters test

SEPTEMBER 25-29, 2017 Monday: Journal; Early American Lit review for test Tuesday: Vocab and Lit review continued; Sentence Types review & practice activity Wednesday: Journal; Early American Lit Test Thursday: Read Frederick Douglass excerpt from ‘My Bondage and My Freedom’; discuss and write paragraph Friday: Skill practice- how to peer review

OCTOBER 2-6, 2017 Monday: Journal; review storytelling elements (plot, character, setting, conflict, etc.); TED talk – Tan Le’s story and partner discussions Tuesday: Storytelling Partner Acitivity and post-activity discussion; view brief video with author Tim O’Brien on storytelling. Wednesday: Journal; read ‘Once More to the Lake’ by E.B. White and discussion questions Thursday: view ‘Heart of the Soldier’ on Frontline and analyze how stories influence people, places, and identity Friday: The Things They Carried (TTTC) anticipation guide and Vietnam war facts to introduce the TTTC.
