5 Pre-requisites for most Medical and Dental Schools
1 year of Biology with Lab (119: ,117) 1 year of General Chemistry with Lab (160: , 171) 1 year of Organic Chemistry with Lab (160: , 311) 1 year of Physics with Lab (750: , 205, 206) 1 year of College level math (Calculus and Statistics) 1 year of English/Writing (355:101, plus 1 additional course) Recommended for the NEW MCAT in 2015 1 semester of Psychology 1 semester of Sociology 1 semester of Biochemistry 1 semester of Statistics

6 Prerequisites continued…..
a BA or BS degree (which includes completing the requirements for a major area of study) Medical schools will accept AP credit for prereqs BUT you must do college level course work in the subject with a lab at Rutgers Dental schools vary in their acceptance of AP credit – especially Physics You need to complete all required (and some recommended) courses BEFORE you take the MCAT (most commonly at the end of Junior year)

All majors (Biological or Other Sciences , Humanities, or Social Sciences) have the same acceptance rates (~50%) Many more science majors apply and are accepted – in % of the national class were science majors RU students with 36 different majors applied and were admitted to medical school in 2013 Most successful - Cell Biology & Neuroscience 66% acceptance Most popular - Biological Sciences (100 applicants) with 53% acceptance Choose the major you want !

9 The Top Ten Reasons Non-academic reasons “Why students don’t get into medical school”
10. Bad Credit –For many of you, credit cards are a new thing. Use them responsibly. 9. Parental Involvement – you are adults 8. Weak or unsubstantial letters of recommendation – none from your major, none from full time faculty 7. Lack of extra-curricular activities – full time needed for Rutgers academic success 6. Sloppy, grammatically incorrect, or inaccurate applications – poor writing skills

10 5. Not using the HPO – Don’t get caught with the “I didn’t know that I needed to…” and Not qualifying for an HPO Committee Statement 4. Poor Interview/Communication Skills - contact Career Services for mock interviews 3. Lack of clinical experience in the field – Shadow and volunteer 2. Disciplinary Actions –academic dishonesty (plagiarism and cheating), behavioral problems – students with criminal records cannot apply to medical school 1. Application Procrastination - Apply early!!

15 Rutgers-RSDM BA/DMD (Dental Medicine)
An accelerated program (7 year) with application at the end of sophomore year – same process as NJMS Program Rutgers-SHRP BA/PA (Physicians Assistant) Application at the end of the sophomore year, RU requirements finished junior year, then start PA classes (3+3 program)
