Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… In our wrap up of the study in the Gospel of John the last Saturday we met, we laid out a pretty cool comparison of the prologue of the gospel by John with the opening of the book of Genesis, noting the parallel structure and looking at the dominant themes.
2
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… At the very beginning: Genesis – “In the beginning…” (1:1a) John – “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God,” (1:1- 2).
3
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Creation: Genesis – ”... God created the heavens and the earth,” (1:1b) John – “All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being,” (1:3)
4
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Light: Genesis – “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness,” (1:3-4) John – “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it….,” (1:4-5).
5
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… God dwelling with mankind: Genesis – “And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day…” (3:8). John – “…and the word became flesh and dwelt among us…” (1:14).
6
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… The basic principle I use to teach through the Old Testament is 'how does the passage point to Jesus?' In this text you see John using a principle that Paul spells out in 2 Corinthians 4:18 (the visible speaks of the invisible) to show how natural creation points to Jesus Christ. So natural light, which Jesus actually made, shows us how the invisible presence of Jesus is a spiritual light for everything! In other words, the reason God made light the way He did was because He was teaching us something about Jesus!
7
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Genesis and Revelation are the “bookends” of the Bible; it ends the way it started with God’s perfect creation fully restored and God dwelling here on the new earth with his own creatures.
8
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Genesis..Revelation… In the beginning (1:1) God created the heavens and the earth (1:1) Let there be light (1:3) The darkness He called “night” (1:5) The gathered waters He called “seas” (1:10) I am...the Beginning and the End (21:6) I saw a new heaven and a new earth (21:1) God gives it light (21:23) There will be no night there (21:25) There was no longer any sea (21:1)
9
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Genesis..Revelation… God made the two great lights (1:16) He also made the stars (1:16) Subdue [the earth]. Rule over (1:28) Tree of Life (2:9) A river watering the garden (2:10) You will surely die (2:17) Or you will die (3:3) Does not need the sun/moon (21:23) The Morning Star (22:16) And they will reign forever (22:5) Tree of Life (22:2) River of the Water of Life (22:1) The free gift of the Water of Life (22:17) No more death (21:4)
10
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Genesis..Revelation… A man will...be united to his wife (2:23-25) Shown a garden into which sin entered (3:6-7) Walk of God with man interrupted (3:8-10) Initial triumph of the Serpent (3:13) Cursed...cursed (3:14, 17) The bride of the wife of the Lamb (21:9-10) Shown a city into which sin will never enter (21:27) Walk of God with man resumed (21:3) Ultimate triumph of the Lamb (20:10; 22:3) No longer...any curse (22:3)
11
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Genesis..Revelation… I will greatly multiply your pain (3:16-17) God banished him (3:23) He drove the man out of the garden (3:24) No more...pain (21:4) They will see His face (22:4) I saw the Holy City (21:2) Pretty amazing! God’s eternal plan includes us — people He created to worship him on the restored, new earth!
12
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Genesis and John go hand in hand. If you can see it they actually explain each other. Genesis actually being the physical creation and John being the spiritual explanation.
13
Genesis / John / Revelation parallels… Proverbs 8: The Word and Wisdom are one. Christ is the sum total of Wisdom – You find Him, you find the finality of life’s purpose and understanding. In Him is the completeness of knowledge and its implications on life. “The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at first, before the beginning of the earth…. then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always” (Proverbs 8:22-30).
