“Everyday Use” Annotation Assignment
Now that you have heard this excerpt once it is time for the close reading of this text. Get out your highlighters! Begin by rereading this excerpt. As you read think about the characterization of Dee, Maggie, and Mama (the narrator). In one color, highlight specific diction the narrator uses to characterize each woman. Highlight any imagery the narrator uses to characterize each woman. Make annotations (notes) in the margins about the significance of what you highlight. Your excerpt should be thoroughly and purposefully annotated. I expect thoughtful annotations!

How does the author view this subject? What is the tone of the passage? How does the author use diction and imagery to create tone and meaning? Tone: the writer’s attitude toward the subject, the audience, or character What is the importance of this passage? What does the author want us to understand about the subject?
