Algebra Can be summed up in 3 words: Variables Expressions Equations
3
Algebra Variable – it represents a number, any number (F – 32) * 5/9 =
E = MC2
4
TERM – a number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables
ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION – a mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols. No = sign! COEFFICIENT – a number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression or equation.
5
VARIABLE – A letter or symbol used to represent a number.
CONSTANT – a quantity or term that does not change its value. It does not have a variable. EVALUATE – to find the value of an expression by replacing each variable in the expression with numbers. (ie find the answer)
6
Rules of Equality Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division
DO THE SAME THING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUAL SIGN.
7
Addition A + 5 5 + A B + 5 = 12 5 + B = 12 Use the Subtraction Rule of Equality
8
Subtraction H – 7 7 - H H – 7 = 2 7 – H = 2
Use the Addition Rule of Equality
9
Multiplication 5G G5 (very rarely used) 5G = 30
Use the Division Rule of Equality
10
Division P/6 6/P P/6 = 3 6/P = 3 Use the Multiplication Rule of Equality
11
One-step equations Y + 7 = 10 L – 6 = 2 4F = 20 M/5 = 4 24/N = 3
Remember your Rules of Equality
