Less dedicated space per worker (focus of 3M Workspace Solutions): office workers have less space to work making it difficult to set-up their space efficiently. They want all of their necessary tools within arms reach but have limited desk surface to do this. The space also tends to get more cluttered because less of desk surface and storage space.
Building a palette of places and increased amount of “we” space: the individuals space is getting smaller and it is being replaced with several different types of spaces supporting different work modes like collaboration. Collaboration takes place in many different forms from co-workers quickly getting together to discuss a solution to a problem, to informal team meetings for a quick check-in on a project, to a video conference with international colleagues. Additional space and types of space is being dedicated to support this interaction. Many times there are not enough of these spaces such as rooms for private phone calls or conference calls and these rooms don’t always have the necessary tools for users to be productive.
Technology as an enabler: How and where people work has been greatly impacted by technology. Technology today allows office workers to work from wherever they are which has driven trends such as an increase in internal worker mobility and the viability of free address/hoteling. Employees can work anywhere on campus as they go through there day of meetings and use of private space to focus or make a personal phone call. Employees can also work from home are as they travel and many companies have idle space because workers are not in the office. They’ve created free address or hoteling space that employees sign-up for when they are in the office. Often times this space comes in different forms depending on what the employee has on their agenda for the day.
Open Office Distractions Hurt Focus: though there are several positives for open office environments, there is one big disadvantage and that is it can be very difficult to do “focused” work because of the many distractions. Because the workstations in an open office have low walls, employees can see each other. If you can be seen, people think you are available. A common distraction is being interrupted by co-workers. Other common distractions are visual seeing people walking around in the background and the many noise distractions from conversations. Many office workers where head-phones to try and block out some of the noise but also signal to co-workers that they are working and don’t want to be interrupted.

Step 1: choose the arm from good, better to best:
Good: Knob adjust arm. Just loosen the knob to set the height and the tilt and re-tighten.
Better: Lever adjust arm. Just flip the lever handle to adjust the height and move back to lock in place. The lever handle ensures positive lock on platform height. The tilt is adjusted with a separate pull lever under the platform, just pull adjust the tilt and release.
Best: Easy-adjust arm. To adjust the height, just tilt the platform move to desired height and release to lock into place. The platform tilt is adjusted by dialing the tilt knob to the desired angle. Step 2: choose the platform
Adjustable Platform. Made from sturdy, injected molded material the adjustable platform has proprietary lateral adjustments for optimal keyboard placement.
