Scotiabank Saddledome
Big Questions Project Scotiabank Saddledome By Andrew 7BE What is the largest Arena in Calgary?
3
Manufactured Or Natural
The Scotiabank Saddledome built in 1983 is a manufactured structure because humans built it. If it was natural it would have been created by nature NOT by humans.
5
Is The Saddledome Mass, Frame or Shell?
The Scotiabank Saddledome is made up of many materials in many different ways so the Dome is all three. It is mass because of all the concrete and metal fused into big saddle shape. It is shell because it is practically just a big container for players and fans to be in. It is a frame structure also because of all the metal rods and and tubes holding it together. This means that the Saddledome is a hybrid structure.
7
What is the Function? The Dome was built in 1983 to replace the old stampede corral. The Saddledome is home to the Calgary Flames and Hitmen NHL and WHL teams. It is also the arena for the Calgary Roughnecks Box Lacrosse team. On the 3rd of October 2016 The Toronto Raptors Played a game in the Dome. The arena was designed to hold 19,289 people! The saddledome also hosted the 1988 winter olympics.
9
What Materials Were Used?
The Saddledome is mainly made of Steel and concrete to support its load. The playing surfaces vary from ice, turf and hardwood. The Dome sometimes has dirt for horse racing. A firm concrete floor is under the playing surface. The seats are made of cloth and plastic. The windows and viewing area around the plastic boards are glass.
11
The Aesthetic Qualities
The Saddledome is not an average looking arena. It is shaped like a saddle as in the name. With red and yellow pillars on each side, the Saddledome looks very nice. On one of the pillars there are hockey masks and each of Calgary's team logos on them. The saddledome is always sporting the team colours.
13
Cost The arena was initially projected to cost 60 million dollars to build, and later changed to over $80 million. Attempts to make construction quicker resulted in a 16 million dollar cost overrun, resulting in a final cost of $97.7 million.
15
Safety Aspects The Saddledome was built with concrete and metal to support the load of thousands of people. Inside the dome there are railings at the bottom of the seating bowls so no one falls. There is netting around the boards and glass to make sure that no one gets hit by a puck or ball. Also the Scotiabank Saddledome has many fire alarms around the arena just incase there is a fire.
17
Forces That Act Against The Arena
The main force applied against the dome is the roof and the building itself, it is a dead load and is compression. Also the actual fans sitting in the arena are a live load and a compression force. The playing field on top of the concrete floor is a dead load and compression force.
19
Material Failure A failure that happened three years ago was a flood, water filled the arena up most of the lower bowl. If there are too many people or to much weight in the saddledome it could cause the dome to cave in or bend. Maybe a puck might be shot and break the glass or boards.
21
Centre Of Gravity And Foundation
The Saddledome needs to have a strong concrete foundation to support all the fans and players and also it's own weight. The centre of gravity on the Saddledome is the bottom of the structure. It is needed to be like that to withstand all the weight compressing on it.
23
The Flood (Extra Slide)
In 2013 the Saddledome was nearly destroyed by the floods. Water came rushing in to the Dome destroying the dressing rooms and filling up 10 seat rows with dirty brown water. The flood water came through and destroyed the kitchen and all the video equipment. The Saddledome needed to be restored before the 2013/14 season or the Flames, Hitmen and Roughnecks would have to find a new arena. Luckily Calgarians chipped in money and the Saddledome was back to normal.

Conclusion. Is it The Largest Arena In Calgary?
The Saddledome is a magnificent structure with an amazing saddle shape. This building is a safe arena for fans and players. The building was made with many different materials in many different ways to make the Scotiabank Saddledome a hybrid structure. It has many different functions including hockey, lacrosse, basketball and sometimes horse racing. The 2013 flood nearly destroyed the Dome but Calgary powered through. The Saddledome was the home to the 1989 stanley cup champions and 1988 olympics ! This arena is the biggest arena in Calgary Alberta holding up to 19,289 people! The Dome has made many memories.

MANDATORY Title page: name, homeroom, big question (one item missing = no points)
Is this a manufactured structure or a natural structure? Explain why! (if your question does not suit either type of structure, explain why, demonstrating you know what manufactured and natural structures are) Is this a mass, frame, or shell structure, or hybrid? Explain why! (again, if your question does not suit this explanation, explain why, demonstrating that you know what mass, frame, shell, and hybrid structures are) What is the function of your building/device/tool…? What are the materials used? What aesthetic qualities does your item have? Describe relevant aspects of cost in your question Describe relevant safety information pertaining to your question Describe forces applicable to your question Explain how structural or material failure might be a factor Describe requirements for use of foundations, center of gravity Other category 1: this one must be approved by Mrs. Bohaychuk, and have a specific title... flood Other category 2: again, must be approved Other category 3: must be approved MANDATORY Video: use a video clip from youtube, tell us when to start and stop watching the clip (time) You will be deducted half a point for not giving us the time to start and finish. 1 minute maximum MANDATORY: minimum 10 high quality, relevant images MANDATORY: Answer the question as a summary paragraph MANDATORY: last slide has some conclusion, like “thanks for watching” or “the end” etc.
