1 Aims and Outcomes Introduce Health Psychology Unit
What is Health Psychology How does Physiology influence psychology Role of the Neuron (AS recap)

2 Healthy Living What are the current guidelines for healthy living?
What are the current guidelines for healthy living? Why do you think people don’t follow these guidelines?

3 HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY

4 Health Psychology - What is it?
focuses on the interaction of mind and body. It looks at how a person's emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and social interactions influence his or her physical well being and why people behave in an unhealthy manner. (Drug taking) The biological, learning, cognitive and social approaches are the focus of studies in this area.

5 What health psychologists have you heard of?

6 HEALTH PSYCHOLOGISTS Occupational Clinical Community Counselling
It used to be that the only model of Ill health was the medical model of health, with its assumption that ill health was caused by biological factors Today it is accepted that social, cognitive and behavioural factors affect health too. NB: Depression, anxiety and stress is linked to faulty thinking (cognitive) which leads to negative emotions and changes in behaviour… More in Unit 4!

7 RECALL the role of the neuron

8 Linking the biology to Psychological health

9 Synapses Main Idea(s) of This Slide - This slide depicts the synapses between the axon of one neuron and the dendrite of another. Here is a close-up view of the synapse between two adjacent neurons. The axon of the neuron at the top of the slide terminates in what is called an axon bulb. Inside the axon bulb are synaptic vesicles that contain neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters are responsible for exiting the axon bulb and entering into the synapse. Once inside the synapse (space between the neurons), the neurohormones bind to the adjacent neurons “postsynaptic membrane” and cause a new depolarization wave to begin. This image on the right depicts the neurotransmitter (neurohormone) being released from the synaptic vesicle into the synapse where it can then bind to receptors on the adjacent neuron.
