Conceptual Model for EPI 6181 Social Epidemiology
(Click on blue rectangles for links) Starting Point: Inequalities in Health Explanations & Causal Theory Designing Multiple Interventions Sociological Explanations Biological Processes & Overall Model Biological Social Influences Place & health Work Outline of a book provisionally entitled “Overview of Social Epidemiology” The book opens with some population health anomalies that demand explanation (e.g., social class disparities in mortality and morbidity; the lower than expected mortality in Kerala and in France; higher than expected mortality in parts of USA) The book reviews explanations that have been suggested for these findings, running from explanations based on social circumstances through individual behavior and psychology, to biological explanations The penultimate chapter will present an overall model that links these types of explanation. The final chapter will discuss implications for interventions to promote health The text outside the circle indicates areas of traditional epidemiological research (life events, social support, health behavior, etc) (Note that the book follows the logic of our Population Health 5-step model) PNI Resiliency & Vulnerability Social Support Individual Stress Theories Behavior & Behavior Change Coping techniques Life Events Allostatic Load Personality
