Outline of a book provisionally entitled “Overview of Social Epidemiology”
The book opens with some population health anomalies that demand explanation (e.g., social class disparities in mortality and morbidity; the lower than expected mortality in Kerala and in France; higher than expected mortality in parts of USA)
The book reviews explanations that have been suggested for these findings, running from explanations based on social circumstances through individual behavior and psychology, to biological explanations
The penultimate chapter will present an overall model that links these types of explanation.
The final chapter will discuss implications for interventions to promote health
The text outside the circle indicates areas of traditional epidemiological research (life events, social support, health behavior, etc)
