11 What do you do for q2?

12 Q2 = language analysis YOU MUST SAY A LOT ABOUT A LITTLE!
You should only spend 10 minutes on this question. You need to explain how the writer uses certain words for an effect (adjectives, nouns, adverbs, phrases, connotations of words). You need to explain how the writer uses certain methods deliberately for an effect (similes, metaphors, personification). YOU MUST SAY A LOT ABOUT A LITTLE!

15 How does the writer use language here to describe the effects of the weather?
The writer uses a simile to describe how in the turbulent weather, the coach was “rocking between the high wheels like a drunken man.” The writer deliberately uses this method to demonstrate how powerless the coach is against the strength and force of the wind because it cannot move in a clear and purposeful way, instead it moves as if it was drunk. The adjective “drunken” in “drunken man” suggests that the weather has made the coach appear intoxicated and almost makes the reader imagine a clumsy coach that cannot cope against the wind’s strength. Furthermore the writer is describing here how the weather has the ability to make everything in the weather’s path seem childlike, weak and pathetic which stresses the brutality of the wind and rain.

16 How does the writer use language here to describe the effects of the weather?
Start with the method (adjective, noun, simile?) The writer uses ________________ when it says “____________________” to make the weather seem……………………. Then explain in detail the effects of this language. Why has it been used? How does it make the reader feel? Think of all the ways it makes the weather seem and why. Keep saying how ‘the writer deliberately does this’

20 BIGGER PICTURE This week we are analysing language and commenting on the writer’s methods for Question 2 of your Paper. THIS HALF TERM: We are practising all the questions for Paper 1 of your English Language GCSE. NEXT LESSON: You will independently explain the effect of language features from a today’s 20th century extract. TODAY’S LESSON: You will IDENTIFY language features and explain their effect using an extract from ‘Room’.

21 Room A story of a five-year-old called Jack, who lives in a single room with his Ma and has never been outside. When he turns five, he starts to ask questions, and his mother reveals to him that there is a world beyond the walls.   Jack has never seen the outdoors before because they have been held as prisoners by a man who captured Jack’s ‘Ma’ when she was nineteen. Jack and his mother manage to escape The Room We will read a description of when Jack is taken outside the hospital for the first time ever.

22 How does the writer use language to describe jack’s experience of going outside?
Ma says it’s time to try going Outside again. “If we stay indoors all the time, it’s like we never did our Great Escape at all.” She’s sounding cranky, she’s trying her laces already. After my hats and shades and shoes, I’m tired again. Ma lets me revolve the door rapidly five times. She pushes and we’re out. It’s so bright, I think I’m going to scream. Then my shades are drowning in darkness and I can’t see. The air smells toxic and makes my nose ache. My neck is suddenly tightening. “Pretending you’re watching this on TV” the nurse says in my ear. I’m squishing the green spikes under my shoes. I bend down and rub them, it doesn’t cut my fingers, instead it tickles my palms. The grass is an emerald sea and I feel like I’m drowning in it. I stare at it and see a twig and a leaf. The leaf is yellow. The air. That air again it tastes awful. My neck tightens again. The sun’s rays are strong and beam through my sunglasses. I feel like my skin is viciously sizzling everywhere.

23 How does the writer use language to describe jack’s experience of going outside?
Get in a group of 3 You will have: An extract Highlighters Job 1 All of you need a highlighter. One person find the adjectives One person find the verbs One person find the adverbs Job 2 Together share the adverbs, adjectives and verbs that you found THEN Everyone needs to make a comment on one adverb, adjective or noun

24 How does the writer use language to describe Jack’s experience of going outside?
The adjective “bright” shows how Jack is not used to the sunlight and that it’s too much for him. It makes the reader feel sympathy for him because he is overwhelmed. The verb “drowning” makes it seem like Jack is panicking and he is suffering. The writer uses it to capture how worried Jack is and how he is finding even the grass to much for him,
