2
Civil Engineers…What do they do?
They plan, design, and supervise the construction of facilities. Their projects vary widely in nature, size and scope: Bridges Buildings Dams Roads Tunnels Airports Water/wastewater treatment and distribution facilities Space satellites/launch facilities Offshore structures Mass transit systems
3
Civil Engineers – Where do they work?
Civil engineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, encompasses many specialties. Many civil engineers hold supervisory or administrative positions, from supervisor of a construction site to city engineer. Others may work in design, construction, research, and teaching.

Interview: timothy ormond, p.e
BS at Worcester Polytechnic Institute MS at Texas A&M University 16 years in civil engineering Currently employed at Altamont Environmental, Inc., in Charlotte, North Carolina
13
Interview summary Mr. Ormond has always been interested in the outdoors and how things in the world work; for this reason he chose civil engineering. Work is often found in the public sector: for cities, counties, municipalities, the Corps of Engineers. This work does not allow for a lot of travel. Work for the private sector can call for more travel as companies interact with other work in other regions, states, etc.
14
Much of his time – maybe 75% - is spent on the computer, though he often interacts with others on the same project he’s on. This statistic, he said, can be highly dependent upon the particular project. His career has taken him to work in Houston, Boston, San Francisco, and now North Carolina. His emphasis in CE is with water resources and he has worked in water drainage, water pollution, and water conservation.
