2. General Information What: Spritzer Oral Argument Competition
When: Monday Feb. 5th and Tuesday Feb. 6th (Finals Thursday 8th)
Time: 5:30 PM – 9 PM
Location: Arizona Center for Law & Society

3. How It Works
Appellate oral argument is when attorneys get the chance to tell the Court their most important arguments, clarify points made in their brief, and answer questions from judges on factual/legal points of the case.
Petitioner & Respondent will each get 10 minutes to give an appellate oral argument
Moving party goes first (7-8 mins argument, 2-3 mins rebuttal)
Must request time for rebuttal at beginning of argument
Non-moving party goes second (no rebuttal)
Competitor arguments are based on briefs, case summaries, and other materials
Closed universe problem --- no outside research to be used!

4. How It Works (cont.)
Competitors introduce themselves, outline main points of their argument with supporting case law/other policy considerations
Judges WILL interrupt you with their own questions
Answer their questions directly with a yes or no, then explain why
Transition back to your main points
Exercise in thinking on your feet
Finalists may be asked to switch sides (from P to R, vice versa)

5. How to Prepare
Know provided materials cold (no substitute for preparedness)
Presentation Diagram: Sections for Your Main Points, Caselaw & Quotes/Rebuttal
Rebuttal from opponents brief
Time your total Main Points presentation for no longer than 5-6 minutes.
Main points from your brief
At least half of the time judges will be asking you questions/clarification
Get competing buddy to practice interrupting/asking q’s

6. Cash Prizes
Cash Prizes:
1st: $500
2nd: $250
3rd: $100
