Helpful Hints What does a Scientist look like and do?--This is a fun place to start. Most children believe a scientist is someone who wears a white lab coat and works with explosions. Have students complete this page totally independently. It’s a lot of fun to see what they come up with. What is a Scientist?—Before we do this activity I read What is a Scientist? by B. Lehn aloud. As a class we also discuss many different types of scientists. Once you get started, the students make many connections. As a class or independently, students fill in the chart with what they have learned. Younger students can draw pictures and older students use their writing. A Scientist’s Tool Box—Demonstrate and discuss the tools a scientist might use with your class. Students will use the word bank to label each picture. Scientist Make Observations—Here’s where the students get to use some of the tools. Have all students use the same object, like their pencil, to make their observations. I like to mix it up a bit and have some objects alike and some different. Scientist Compare Data and Results—Here’s where having a different object pays off. Students compare and contrast their results. Scientific Investigation—I always like to end with a fun experiment. There are many fun experiments on the web. It will not be difficult to find one your class will love!
