3 Dynamic charts – Definition
All charts change dynamically when the underlying data changes Challenge: change what the chart is showing without using chart dialogs User controls on the sheet to set chart parameters

4 What makes a chart dynamic?
Data source is the key User can interact with cell values via controls type values manually select from drop-down use slider controls (will not work in browser) Cell values feed into formulas that assemble the chart data source

5 What can be made dynamic
Rolling data, e.g. last 6 months Timeline start and duration Conditional formatting of data points (high/low) Highlighting key data in busy charts

6 Filter data source Excel Table object – filter with slicers on dashboard Slicers for Table objects were introduced in Excel 2013 Pivot table slicers

7 Named ranges Find the data using formulas
Based on parameters provided via dashboard controls Chart labels can be the anchor element Offset from label name to define series range Naming tips (don’t start with ‘c’ or ‘r’) Techniques for applying range names as chart data source

8 Fixed data range with formulas
Chart source range is fixed Formulas pull the data into that grid Combine with GetPivotData() to pull data from Pivot Table for a powerful combination of slicers, named ranges and formulas.

9 Controlling chart elements
Consistent maximum Y axis value Conditional highlighting Series highlighting Axis labels (time line in XY charts) Data labels

10 Dynamic labels Text in cells instead of built-in labels
Before Excel 2013: The manual way XY Chart Labeller add-in Excel 2013 and up Value from cells XY Chart Labeller add-in (because it’s backwards compatible)

11 Limitations Some aspects cannot be automated without VBA
Adjusting plot size Setting min and max axis values (vote for this!) VBA and forms controls (sliders) don’t work in Excel Online or Excel for mobile. Slicers don’t work in Excel for mobile

12 Demos

13 Thanks for watching!
