Flip-Flop
In the political world, a “flip-flop” has come to mean more than beach footwear!
Today, a politician who changes positions on a topic is said to be guilty of a “flip-flop.”
This derogatory label is not new, but can be traced back to the 1880s.

Flip-Flop
At that time, President Grover Cleveland compromised with the United Kingdom regarding fishing rights in the waters off Canada.
This outraged New England states that depended on the fishing industry.
A fallout of Cleveland’s political concession was that a New York Tribune writer called his action a “fisheries flip-flop.”

Flip-Flop
The phrase was probably a play on words that brought to mind the way fish flip and flop on a boat deck.
Since that time, countess leaders have been accused of “flip-flopping.”
We are suspicious of those whose words are betrayed by their actions.
The biblical writer James agrees, saying that our professions of faith must be matched by accompanying action.
