Today, a politician who changes positions on a topic is said to be guilty of a “flip-flop.” This derogatory label is not new, but can be traced back to the 1880s. This outraged New England states that depended on the fishing industry. A fallout of Cleveland’s political concession was that a New York Tribune writer called his action a “fisheries flip-flop.” Click to add notes Graphic: Jane Kelly / iStock / Thinkstock®

Since that time, countess leaders have been accused of “flip-flopping.” We are suspicious of those whose words are betrayed by their actions. The biblical writer James agrees, saying that our professions of faith must be matched by accompanying action. Click to add notes Graphic: Jane Kelly / iStock / Thinkstock®
