Secret government documents about the US involvement in Vietnam that were leaked to the press in 1971 by Daniel Ellsberg Highlights include The US had been involved in Vietnam since 1940s Golf of Tonkin allowed President Johnson to increase US involvement with Congressional oversight

Thought his enemies were everywhere and he wanted to annihilate them Enemies included "hooligans, hippies, and radical liberals" Setup a secret taping system that recorded all conversations Viewed Democrats as "sniveling hand-wringers"; Intellectuals as "an effete corps of imprudent snobs"; news media as "nattering nabobs of negativism."

1972 election looming… Paranoia set in and Nixon created Committee to RE-Elect the President (CREEP) to spy on Democrats. Group tried to wiretap Democratic phones at the Democratic national Committee headquarters in the Watergate apartment and office complex in Washington, but were caught by a security guard.
