Families screened and selected by local coordinator Volunteers—they want you in their home! Most students say this is their favorite part of the trip!

25 LANGUAGE & FRIENDSHIP Founded by foreign language teachers in 1988
Focus on learning and using the language rather than a sightseeing tour Custom designed tours, excellent service Winner of Minnesota Pro Lingua Award for commitment to foreign language education

26 SAFETY & SECURITY Violent crime in Spain is extremely rare—much lower rate than cities in U.S. 1 adult per 10 students traveling

27 MEETINGS Students will meet once a month after school during the first two terms of the year Twice a month during third term Parents and students will meet once a month from January-June, on either Sunday afternoons or Wednesday evenings (according to group preference) Attendance at all meetings is required

28 MEETINGS Trip planning folder contains LOTS of useful information
What if…? Vocabulary Cultural differences to watch for

33 FUNDRAISERS There will be fundraising activities to help offset the cost of the trip. Most of these are coordinated by parents. In the past, we’ve sold cookie dough, butter braids, etc. Write letters asking people/businesses to sponsor you Open to lots of ideas: dinners, donations…we could have separate meetings to plan and coordinate this part.

34 FUNDRAISER Chocolate & treats, cheese & sausage sale
Brochures available tonight—get started right away! All proceeds go directly to you! For every 20 items sold, you get a 5 lb. bag of gummi bears! Web-based sales—out-of-town relatives can help out too!!

35 HAVE A JOB? Then saving for the trip is easy!
Let’s say you make $7.50/hour and work 20 hours/week. That is about $150/week (before tax) You could save enough for the trip in roughly 26 weeks.

36 ELIGIBILITY Trip is not sponsored by Cedar Rapids School District or Kennedy High School. You must be currently enrolled in Spanish 2 or higher (and remain enrolled all year). I reserve the right to select participants based on teacher recommendations, academic standing, health/attendance issues, meeting attendance, and/or discipline/behavior issues.

37 WHY GO? To see the culture, history, and geography of another country up close. To practice and improve your Spanish skills. To learn what it’s like to live in another country—not just be a tourist. To become more independent, self-confident, and to learn more about yourself and your capabilities. To improve understanding of other cultures and points of view

38 WHY GO? TO HAVE FUN!

39 WHAT’S NEXT? Language and Friendship application
First payment of $800 is due with application (by October 15) One recent school photo Letter to host family (we’ll meet after school to work on this together) Apply for a passport if you do not have one!
