WHY NOW??? THE PARIS AGREEMENT , THAT’S WHY! The Paris Agreement (Accord de Paris) is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year It was opened for signature on 22 April 2016 (Earth Day) in a ceremony in New York City. As of November 2016, 193 UNFCCC members have signed the treaty, 97 of which have ratified it. After the European Union ratified the agreement in October 2016, there were enough countries that had ratified the agreement that produce enough of the world's greenhouse gases for the agreement to enter into force.The agreement will take effect on 4 November 2016. THE GIGAFACTORY! The Tesla Gigafactory 1 is a lithium-ion battery factory under construction, primarily for Tesla Motors. The factory started limited production in the first quarter of 2016It will be the world's second-largest building by usable space As of 2014, the projected capacity of Gigafactory for 2020 was to have been 35 gigawatt-hours per year of cells as well as 50 GWh/yr of battery packs. Production could be equivalent of supplying 500,000 Tesla cars per year. When finished, the factory is planned to produce more lithium ion batteries in a year than were produced in the entire world in THE GIGAFACTORY on its own is one of the major advancements in our fight against global warming. 9 IMPORTANCE OF POWER ELECTRONICS
Increasing our emphasis on renewable sources will solve our problems, to some extent. However conservation of energy along with more efficient use of energy is the right way to mitigate our problems. Hence power electronics plays an important role in the energy conservation scenario and also in industrial automation and efficient energy systems. Power line static VAR compensators, Active harmonic filters, HVDC systems, Solid State AC & DC circuit breakers are just some of the many ways we contribute to the solutions. SSCB Solid state technology applied to this traditional device has resulted in circuit breakers free from arcing and switch bounce, that offer correspondingly higher reliability and longer lifetimes as well as faster switching times. A typical solid state circuit breaker will switch in a matter of microseconds, as opposed to milliseconds or even seconds for a mechanical version. New solid state products currently on the market utilize the many benefits associated with power MOSFETs to deliver a product far superior to earlier silicon versions. Power MOSFETs offer low on resistances (as compared to bipolar transistors), low voltage drops, low EMI, faster switching times and good thermal stability of key parameters. LIFE SKILLS PRESENTATION

HVDC Transmission A high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) electric power transmission system (also called a power super highway or an electrical super highway) uses direct current for the bulk transmission of electrical power, in contrast with the more common alternating current (AC) systems. For long-distance transmission, HVDC systems may be less expensive and suffer lower electrical losses. For underwater power cables, HVDC avoids the heavy currents required to charge and discharge the cable capacitance each cycle. HVDC allows power transmission between unsynchronized AC transmission systems. Since the power flow through an HVDC link can be controlled independently of the phase angle between source and load, it can stabilize a network against disturbances due to rapid changes in power. HVDC also allows transfer of power between grid systems running at different frequencies, such as 50 Hz and 60 Hz. This improves the stability and economy of each grid, by allowing exchange of power between incompatible networks. LIFE SKILLS PRESENTATION
